The event marked the start of construction for the Hyoffwind project, which will establish the country's first 25 MW green hydrogen production plant in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Zeebrugge. This initiative is set to make a tangible impact on decarbonization efforts. By 2026, the groundbreaking project will deliver its first hydrogen molecules, reducing annual CO₂ emissions by 25,000 tons across the mobility and industrial sectors. At the event, Matthias Diependaele, Minister-President of the Flemish Government and Flemish Minister of Economy, Innovation and Industry highlighted the strategic importance of hydrogen for Flanders' energy future. Looking back at an energizing European Hydrogen Week where Virya Energy was present together with the Belgian Hydrogen Council and its members, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Fluxys . My key take-aways: 🎯 Although the targets set at the height of the invasion of Ukraine will most probably not be achieved, the EU remains indisputably the continent where the clean hydrogen industry is the most advanced. 🧠 Over the last few years we have learned a lot and we now have a much better understanding of what the clean hydrogen industry will be and what it won't be. 💲 It is not illogical that the projects least adapted to the reality of tomorrow's market should encounter difficulties. Just because it's a clean hydrogen project doesn't mean it's a good one. 🎤 On a personal note, I was honoured to contribute on stage at the ‘Fueling the Future: How Hydrogen Contributes to the Transport of Tomorrow’ session yesterday during the B2B Forum of European Hydrogen Week. My key messages during the panel: 🏭 Production: With Hyoffwind (Zeebruges), Virya Energy will start producing green molecules by the end of 2026. ⛽ Distribution: in addition to the 6 hydrogen stations in operation today DATS 24, we keep on developing new stations aimed at heavy-duty vehicles. 🏬 Offtakers: we are making progress, notably with the Colruyt Group, towards putting the first fleets of hydrogen trucks into operation. 🚛 Trucks: It is still challenging today to have a clear view of the range of hydrogen trucks available in 2027. 🔗 The hydrogen economy moving forward can no longer be reduced to a question of 🐔 and 🥚 . Together with the Belgian Hydrogen Council and WaterstofNet , we are setting up Minimum Viable Ecosystems bringing together all necessary stakeholders ⏩ .
