The Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) is the coordination and information platform for marine scientific research in Flanders. The VLIZ is a focal point for marine and coastal-related research and serves as an international contact point. The VLIZ signs cooperation agreements with Flemish research groups and administrations and furthermore integrates its activities in national and international networks. Major activities are the management of the Flanders Marine Data and Information Centre (VMDC), the Infodesk, the Sea Library and the research vessel 'Simon Stevin'.

🏆 Exciting news about the Dr. Edouard Delcroix Awards! 🔬 Friedel Dewulf (Universiteit Gent – Blue Growth Research Lab) has won the €10,000 Research Grant 2025 for groundbreaking research on marine-derived yessotoxins as potential cancer treatments. 🏖️ Julia Kinet (VLIZ & UGent) has received the €2,500 Incentive Award 2024 for her innovative study on how coastal environments enhance cognitive and physical well-being in older adults. Wat een mooie tijdsreeks zijn we daar met zijn allen aan het opbouwen - om effecten te zien van klimaatwijziging, menselijk ingrijpen op zee, of de aankomst van niet-inheemse soorten. Vanaf dit jaar gebruiken we ons nieuwe dataplatform minka.vliz.be voor invoer, validatie en visualisatie.

This year’s theme, ‘Submerged,’ challenged young minds to find real solutions for underwater challenges, from protecting coral reefs to developing new deep-sea exploration technologies. In her PhD research (VLIZ, Ghent University, and University of Antwerp), she discovered how microscopic sea spray aerosols, tiny splashing particles from breaking waves, can subtly influence our immune system. 🦠 Her study shows that these particles vary seasonally and may play a role in the health benefits of sea air. 🎉 Congratulations Dr. Stan Pannier! 📜 Yesterday, he successfully defended his PhD (VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute & KU Leuven), shedding light on an overlooked chapter of Belgian history: the involvement of the Austrian Netherlands (1775-1795) in the transatlantic slave trade. 🌍⛵ Despite lacking colonies or a trading company, merchants like Frederik Romberg played an active role. Through his Ghent-based company, he was responsible for the deportation of around 3,000 enslaved people to Cuba and Saint-Domingue.
