VVOB – education for development is an international organisation with over 40 years’ experience in strengthening the quality of education systems in Africa, Asia and South America in close partnership with ministries of education and their institutions. Research shows that, of all school-based factors, the quality of teaching and school leadership has the biggest impact on learning outcomes of learners. As such, the professional development of teachers and school leaders is VVOB’s primary priority in ensuring quality education for all. In #Cambodia, less than one-third of 3- to 5-year-olds are on track in literacy and numeracy, with girls often facing extra challenges due to stereotypes. Thanks to teachers like Nget Mony Satya and VVOB’s SMILE project in partnership with The Ministry of Education Youth and Sports, inclusive, play-based teaching methods are making maths accessible and engaging for all learners. Everyone in society has an important role to play in ending violence against women and girls. Because VVOB's expertise lies in strengthening teachers' professional capacity, we support Ministries of Education in working with school leaders and teachers to explore and challenge harmful gender biases in teaching and school environments. Harmful gender biases, stereotypes, and norms impact girls and boys. Dismantling and transforming them can build safer school environments as well as a safer world for all. Equitable education benefits all. Violence against women and girls remains the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violation in the world. Addressing and challenging harmful gender norms in education systems offers ways to get at the root causes of inequality and systems of oppression. At the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, VVOB joined forces with key partners to address Africa’s critical learning crisis. Speaking at #COP29's Ministerial Roundtable on greening education and enhancing climate literacy metrics, VVOB's Inge Vandevyvere stressed the essential role of critical reflection in education—both for learners and teachers. Reflecting on the impact of OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), she shared: "I asked my sister, who's a teacher, what PISA could mean for her day-to-day practice. She said, 'It made me reflect on my own practices, how I engage with my students, and how I address them, taking into account their diverse backgrounds. That's exactly what we need for climate education to lead to action: the skill of critical reflection.'" With a new global metric on climate literacy and supporting indicators set to debut in PISA 2029, there’s an opportunity to inspire meaningful change by ensuring teachers' voices and experiences are included. What an inspiring two days at the IT'S PLAY Regional Symposium in Lusaka, Zambia! Over 120 participants from Africa and beyond gathered to discuss how to advance play-based learning in early childhood education. Here’s a look at the top takeaways: Partnerships matter: Scaling learning through play needs strong government support to make lasting changes in young learners’ lives. Community engagement works: Initiatives like Aga Khan Foundation's PlayBox show how simple play activities at home empower parents to create a nurturing environment for playful learning at home. Data and advocacy are key: Good monitoring, evaluation and learning practices and strong advocacy help shape effective programmes keeping them adaptable and impactful. Professional development is essential: Research shows that trained teachers use play more efficiently, boosting early literacy and student engagement. As Aaron Morris of The LEGO Foundation said, “Learning through play accelerates children's learning, fostering creativity and sharp thinking.” As we wrap up this symposium, we are inspired by the momentum built here and believe it will lead to progress in advancing play-based learning for children across Africa!
