🌱 Net zero: Championing Innovation and Sustainability in Agriculture Agriculture is uniquely positioned to be an important tool in the transition to net zero. Whilst often characterized as a significant contributor to GHG emissions and part of the climate change problem, it is also a key part of the solution. At UPL , we’re working to empower farmers to be climate champions—helping them secure strong, climate-resilient yields, rebuild and maintain soil health, and use their crops to sequester carbon as effectively and efficiently as possible. What’s more, we’re incentivizing and rewarding farmers for this important work. Our Gigaton Carbon Program aims to sequester a gigaton of carbon in agricultural soils by 2040, helping towards wider net zero targets while also supporting farmers’ incomes through carbon credits. We’re also equipping farmers with sustainable, biological inputs from our Natural Plant Protection (NPP) that use naturally-derived active ingredients. These ingredients range from orange oil to seaweed and support crop health, improving their sequestration capacity as they do so. Alongside leading capacity-building initiatives that offer training in good agricultural practices (GAPs) that further support sequestration, such as cover cropping and no-till practices, UPL Corp | Agri Solutions is able to offer farmers a holistic package of support to significantly mitigate global carbon emissions. On 5th of November, UPL Bulgaria, represented by Eleonora Markova, Sub-Region Head Central Eastern Europe took part in the “Integrating Agricultural Sustainability for a Net Zero Economy Across All Sectors” panel at the Net Zero Forum hosted in Sofia. We express our gratitude to Konstantin Haralampiev from AgrovarCC and Mariya Hristova from AgriVentures for their insightful contributions and the valuable examples they shared during our discussion. The Net Zero Economy Forum demonstrated the incredible power of bringing together individuals and businesses driven by sustainable values. Big thanks to Kapital Events and the entire team who organized this impactful event for the privilege of being part of this transformative movement. These discussions and shared insights are essential steps toward meaningful change.🍀

How can carbon become a strategic asset in transforming the agrifood sector? This was the focus of the panel discussion “Carbon as Currency: Redefining AgriFood for a Sustainable Tomorrow,” which brought together leaders in policy, entrepreneurship, and sustainability to explore innovative solutions for a greener future. 🌱 💬 “Agriculture is often accused of harming the planet. However, with the right methodology, it can actually become a healer for the Earth. Carbon farming is a concept that focuses on leveraging agricultural practices to promote sustainability,” said Grigoris Chatzikostas. The discussion highlighted the potential of carbon management to drive economic growth, enhance sustainability, and position the agrifood sector as a leader in the global green transition. It also delved into the carbon renewal system—legislation, auditing mechanisms, a national register, and exchange platforms for rewarding sustainability efforts—and explored how digital tools can help turn these ideas into actionable solutions. 🌟 A big thank you to our incredible speakers: 🔥 Firestarter: Grigoris Chatzikostas, Partner at reframe.food 🎙️ Konstantin Haralampiev, Co-founder of AgrovarCC 🎙️ Remigijus Lapinskas, Director of the Green Policy Institute 🎙️ Eimantas Pranauskas, President of the Lithuanian Agricultural Companies Association 👏 Moderated by the talented Živilė Kropaitė-Basiulė. 🌱 Exploring the Role of Agriculture in Europe's Climate Goals 🌍 A recent study sheds light on the intersection of agricultural policies and climate action in the EU. In 2022, agriculture accounted for 11% of the EU’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with two-thirds stemming from livestock activities. Meanwhile, the Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) sector removed a net 236 million tonnes of CO2e, highlighting the potential of sustainable land management. Through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023-2027, 32% of funding is allocated to climate-friendly practices, soil health, biodiversity, and beyond. Key interventions, such as crop rotation, cover crops, and organic farming, are estimated to reduce GHG emissions by 31 million tonnes of CO2e per year, representing a significant step toward the EU’s climate targets. However, uncertainties remain regarding the adoption and impact of these practices. To fully realize their potential, better methodologies, localized data, and increased farmer engagement are essential. 🌾 This study underscores the critical role of agriculture in achieving climate neutrality and the need for ongoing collaboration across Member States. Let’s continue driving innovation, sustainability, and resilience in Europe’s agricultural landscape. 💡 #SustainableFarming #ClimateAction #AgriculturePolicy #GHGReduction #EUClimateGoals #LandUse #CAP2023 #RegenerativeAgriculture #CarbonSequestration
