🌐 The global healthcare workforce is facing increasing pressure, including the growing complexity of care, highlighting the urgent need to optimise the scope of practice of AHPs and develop robust career pathways to maintain their engagement in clinical roles. This optimisation is crucial for effective workforce planning and transformation of services. Although the potential of the AHPs' scope of practice presents significant opportunities for employers, it remains underused and often misunderstood. Through collaborative learning, we can leverage innovative practices and better address the needs of AHPs globally. This collaborative approach extends beyond limited geographical boundaries, enhancing our capacity to implement effective solutions across wider areas. This systematic review study discusses the significance of #core #competencies in #healthcare #professionals and the need for assessing them in clinical settings. Nine studies were identified, covering various competencies like professionalism, teamwork, leadership, and patient-centered care. Common competencies include professionalism, ethical and legal issues, research and evidence-based practice, personal and professional development, teamwork and collaboration, leadership and management, and patient-centered care. https://lnkd.in/gf_2jfyH

For the past few years we have been experimenting with different ways of thinking and doing in the implementation of South Africa's Ideal Clinic QI initiative. In this recent paper, co-authored with Lucy Gilson, Beth Engelbrecht and Alfonso Patientia, we share lessons learnt from using a three-pronged approach to strengthen and leverage the implementation of the initiative to support learning and continuous improvement. The approach focused on 1) trusting relationships, 2) reflexive assessment and 3) collective sense-making & collaboration. The key messages from this experience are: *In an environment of trusting relationships, psychological safety, reflexive processes and collaboration, healthcare standards-based QI initiatives can provide powerful avenues for learning and meaningful change.   *However, leveraging these sorts of QI initiatives, such as the Ideal Clinic, requires recognising and grappling with the underlying complex realities of healthcare delivery, as well as the social and micropolitical dimensions of QI.   *A rigid focus on centrally pre-determined targets without recognising and addressing underlying system and process challenges can result in negative unintended consequences and actually undermine learning and improvement efforts.   *Rushed and undue pressure on healthcare facilities to comply with standards, coupled with unrealistic expectations and lack of sufficient support, can lead to artificial compliance with limited value for the quality of care.   #districthealthsystem #learninghealthsystems #systemsthinking #healthcarestandards #qualityimprovement https://lnkd.in/dFM42Sa5

CHF has been made aware of the Medical Board of Australia’s recent proposal to impose mandatory health checks once medical practitioner’s reach 70-years-old. The proposal presents the complex issue of ensuring patient safety and non-discriminatory practices. CHF understand the Board is considering three options for reform: - Maintain the status quo (which the Board has said is not a viable option) - See clinicians undergo a detailed health assessment to determine their fitness to practice once they turn 70, conducted by a specialist health professional. - Have a general health check-up by the clinician's own GP. The health check would need to be done once every three years and then annually once they turn 80 (the Board’s preferred option). CHF CEO, Dr Elizabeth Deveny, said “I suspect the general sentiment of consumers will fall somewhere in the middle, on option three which is the Board’s preference. I do wonder though if there are other avenues, through CPD and other ongoing professional practice improvements that could address some of these issues before we go straight to a health check model.” CHF wants to see the Medical Board of Australia fully engage with the community on this important issue.
