Benefaction is proud to announce our 16th place ranking in the Top 50 Equitable Funders list, created by Future of Good and QuakeLab. We're keen to dig into the findings to identify gaps in our funding practices, in our ongoing efforts to help address the systemic inequalities that pervade our society, including the philanthropic sector. In honour of National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, some of Benefaction's team members are participating in #onedayspay! Donations will support Indspire, a national charity "that invests in the education of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people for the long term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada". Our foundation management service provider, Cause Strategies Inc., will be matching all donations made by our team. This article touches on several important details that I discuss with a lot of folks as they are thinking about getting more serious with their generosity. I love having "blue sky" conversations with these folks and although I "wear the hat" of a Community Foundation that offers a Donor Advised Fund, I try not to solely focus on that as the solution. Although, I am proud to say that Donor Advised Funds were first introduced by Community Foundations back in the 1950's. Instead, I focus on understanding what they want, what kind of impact they are looking to have, who's involved, how open to learning and education they are and what their timelines are. All of these questions are critical to setting up the right structure for now, and for the future (knowing as well that things can change...) The points listed in this article are good ones, and definitely important for folks to consider. And as we always know, each situation is unique so it's important to take the time to consider what is best. I know that my Community Foundation colleagues across the country use the same approach like Mary Beth Taylor, CFRE, Diane Silva, Kristin Helgason, Noel Xavier and Riz Nathoo, MBA. In addition, strategic thinkers like Malcolm Burrows, Serena Hak, MFA-P, Nicola Elkins, Michael Todd, MFA-P and Dr. Sharilyn Hale, C.Dir have a lot to offer too.
