We were honoured and humbled this week to host the Indigenous Ocean Business Forum in Ottawa, bringing together Indigenous leaders from coast to coast to coast. Representing Miawpukek First Nation on the Atlantic coast, to Inuit Nunangat in the Arctic, and the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations on the Pacific coast, and dozens of Indigenous Nations and communities in between, the forum captured the spirit and resiliency of how Indigenous people are taking the lead in ocean innovation and conservation. Attendees heard from Indigenous experts on how they are forging paths in traditional on non-traditional ocean revenue streams to support Indigenous communities. Panel and presentation highlights included the development of a burgeoning Indigenous seaweed sector, how Indigenous proponents are coming together to leverage carbon offset credits to support new Marine Protected Areas, and how one small Nation was able to successfully diversify their economy to provide dividends directly back to community members. The event was rounded out by at a fireside with Chief Terry Paul and John Risley recounting how an unscripted pitch decades previous, led to an unlikely pairing and the eventual $1B buyout of Clearwater Seafoods. Chief Paul explained that rather than creating an opportunity just for his own community of Membertou First Nation, it was important to band together a coalition of First Nations from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland to ensure there were opportunities for all Mi’kmaw people from the region. Three years onward from that historic deal, the power of partnership is still on display as Membertou was recently able to build a consortium of partners to take over the 140-year-old dockyard in St. John’s.
