Youth have been priced out of Canadian urban centres. Housing research typically focuses on homeowners, but this excludes nearly 80% of youth who do not own homes. In response, Youthful Cities has released 'The State of Housing for Young People in Canada' which brings youth into the conversation on housing in Canada’s 15 most populated cities. How often do you get to say "I went to a great conference last week". Not as often as you'd hope. Especially in the realm of urbanism, housing, public transport. Normally these things feel like talking shops, with limited enthusiasm for action. Which is why I'm kinda happy I went to the Canadian Urban Institute State of Canada's Cities Summit last week. And yeah, there was a lot of talking, but pretty much every single panelist seemed to be insisting we get on with it, show more action, accept the imperfections in the plan, but learn by doing rather than commissioning another theoretical study. You won't find a lot of people all that happy with the state of Canada just now. We're politically divided, economically lagging, mired in infrastructure debt. Canadians spend a lot of time worrying about how to define themselves, often trying to say they're not Americans, or British, or French. Understandably so in some cases. We love to tout our diversity, but often end up as what one speaker called a multiethnic monoculture. A bit of a blob, a bit scared to stand out from the crowd. But maybe we're widening our perspective. Recognising the risk averse approach is making everything we do in cities too slow, too expensive or just bad. What I loved was how Mary W. Rowe who organised the event kept it focused on priorities. What do we need to do no, what have we got to say yes to, what do we have to say no to for a bit, rather than dragging it out. In the end there was a lot of hope, which ain't no strategy, but does tend to be the start of one. And a commitment to breaking down the silos, that stop us from building coherent systems ... and hopefully that leads us to being able to do much more, much faster, much better and with better bang for the buck.
