#ILoveScience #FundamentalResearch 🇫🇷🇨🇦 Unlike applied research, fundamental research often yields findings that may not have immediate practical applications but are essential for driving long-term innovation. Motivated by curiosity and the desire to expand knowledge, fundamental research seeks to answer questions of why, what, and how. However, there is an increasing emphasis on research with immediate practical applications, often driven by political and economic pressures. This round table will discuss the pivotal role of fundamental research in advancing our understanding of mosquito-borne viruses and mosquito biology, bringing together Dr. Selina Sagan, Dr. Ben Mathews and the French Scientist in Residence at Green College, UBC, Dr. Roenick P. Olmo, to explore how factors influencing viral evolution, mosquito behavior, and antiviral resistance mechanisms can inspire and support the development of innovative technologies to disrupt transmission of mosquito-borne viruses. The French Scientist in Residence at Green College, UBC, Vancouver is a scientific residency programme launched by the Cultural and Scientific Office of the Ambassade de France au Canada, in partnership with Green College of the University of British Columbia (UBC) for researchers based in France. The aim of this programme is to facilitate and strengthen collaboration with academic researchers at UBC in scientific fields that are priorities for France and Canada, as defined at the first Joint Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation between France and Canada in 2023. 📅 5-6:30 pm, Wednesday, November 27 📍 Green College Coach House and livestreamed More information and Zoom link : https://lnkd.in/gTq4WtjN

📺 On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25), a day to raise awareness and advocate for an end to gender-based violence, meet Friba Rezayee, an Afghan women’s rights activist and the first woman to represent her country at the Olympic Games. Now living in Vancouver, Canada, Friba Rezayee founded the organization Women Leaders of Tomorrow, which fights against the deprivation of freedoms imposed on Afghan women by the Taliban regime, through education and sports. In June 2024, she was invited to Paris for the International Day of Olympism, and to participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony. In this video, Friba Rezayee discusses her commitment to women’s rights, shares her experience at the Olympic Games in France, and highlights the role that France and INSEP - Institut National du Sport, de l'Expertise et de la Performance played in the bronze medal of Afghan athlete Zakia Khudadadi in taekwondo at the Paralympic Games. Friba also underlines France’s commitment to Afghan women and girls, whose human rights are severely and systematically violated by the Taliban, and France’s continuous support for human rights advocates. https://lnkd.in/gU5ZU3Zp [Version française : https://lnkd.in/gZ6zW4SH] Ministère de l'Europe et des Affaires étrangères Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 International Paralympic Committee Anne Hidalgo Tony Estanguet Ambassade de France au Canada #InternationalDayForTheEliminationOfViolenceAgainstWomen #EducationIsMyRight #LetHerLearn #ToutesEtTousEgaux #ArretonsLesViolences

🌲🔥🚒 Strengthening France-BC cooperation in wildfire management Early November, a firefighter from BC Wildfire Service (Ministry of Forests) took part in a training course in France on forest fire doctrine assimilation at public safety training center École d’application de Sécurité Civile (ECASC). ✅Participants received presentations on satellite monitoring, intervention area analysis, France’s national wildfire preparedness and response strategy, including the command chain process. ✅They were able to use forest fire simulators and virtual reality tools developed by the ECASC. ✅They also took part in practical exercises through simulated interventions and had multiple opportunities to exchange best practices. 🇫🇷🇨🇦🤝 France and Canada are working together to address the growing global threat posed by wildfires. In April 2024, during the official visit of French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, France and Canada signed a Declaration of Intent to collaborate on the fight against wildfires. This includes mobilizing assistance during emergencies, as well as cooperation in areas like innovation, data and information sharing, and fire-fighting personnel training, such as this one. 🎥Art meets quantum science: rethinking creativity, research and communication in a unique residency The 2024 Vancouver #Quantum studio residency, a partnership between our culture and science services at the Embassy of France based at the Consulate General, the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (Blusson QMI) at the University of British Columbia (UBC), just came to a close. In this video, dive into the intersection of art and quantum science as we explore how these two fields challenge and inspire each other. Join Dr. James Day from the Blusson QMI, Shelly Rosenblum from the Belkin Art Gallery, and artist Caroline Delétoille for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how this residency fosters groundbreaking ideas and sparks creativity, both scientific and cultural. “What has been most fascinating looking at Caroline’s work is that she really things very hard about the paradox of the #quantum, and to think about the relationship between the seen and the unseen, and making the connections.” — Shelly Rosenblum, Curator of Academic Programs, Belkin Art Gallery “Collaboration is extremely important. There is great potential in scientists speaking with artists who really can jostle and force you to think about ideas in directions they may never have considered before.” — James Day, Research Associate, Blusson QMI 💡🇫🇷🇨🇦Watch the video to discover how this unique residency opens new avenues for understanding quantum science and fosters innovative ways to communicate complex ideas amongst experts and to the public. https://lnkd.in/gc7Rp538 Embassy of France in Canada UBC Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (Blusson QMI) Morris & Helen Belkin Art Gallery Caroline Delétoille Geraldine Dantelle-Le Scornet Vincent Zonca Charlotte MONTEL Nicolas Baudouin James Day Shahrzad (Zad) A.
