I first got to know Andy Fillmore when he began working for HRM as an urban planner, in the early 2000s. We soon found a shared passion for urban city-building and got to work on a number of projects together, including HRM by Design (the downtown plan), Grand Parade / Province House Public Lands Plan, the 2011-2016 Economic Strategy (which gave rise to the streetscape plan for Argyle Street), the Strategic Urban Partnership, and more. Andy and I continued to work together, in his subsequent career stops at Dal's School of Planning, and Waterfront Development Corp. When Andy ran for Federal politics, and won, in 2015, I was so happy to have an urban champion on Parliament Hill. During his tenure as MP for Halifax, he was open and accessible, and we continued to work together - most notably on Halifax's inaugural Fleet Week, in 2023. It is therefore, with great pride and pleasure, that I welcome him as the new mayor of Halifax. I have seen first hand, not only his commitment to his home city, but his deep understanding of how to get great things done. I am so glad we get to continue to dream and work together. All the best, Mayor Fillmore!

After last night, we all need a good news story. "I get to wake up and everything's different now.” - Jesse Vincent. Thank you CBC for telling Jesse's story. Thank you Shelter Nova Scotia for giving him a place to call his own 💗 THIS is a fabulous example of what Downtown Halifax's Navigator Outreach Program can achieve when we all work together. https://lnkd.in/eb34K-U8

NEW MURAL ALERT SamQwan's new work, 7 Grandfather Teachings, is located in the Barrington Street Bus Shelter near the corner of Barrington Street and Spring Garden Road. Each of the 7 Teachings, are written in both the English & Mi’kmaq on individual mural panels. Each of the Teachings, are represented by a different animal or creature who brings them to the world. The lettering of the 7 grandfather teachings is layered in color reflective glow in the dark paint. A reminder of how the 7 Grandfather Teachings are both symbolically, and at times literally, the truths that keep the darkness at bay. The choice for all names to be written in English & Mi’kmaq languages, was made in recognition of the historic injustices visited against the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. The artist’s own grandmother, Lucy Amato, experienced this firsthand as survivor of the residential school system. The last school in Canada was not closed until 1997, and their dark legacy continues to impact the next generations. Being both Black & Indigenous, the artist chose to use a colour pallet of skin tones inspired by those communities for the base of the installation to symbolize the beauty & wisdom that will emerge if given the opportunity. For true Truth & Reconciliation to occur, honoring these teachings for all people will be essential for this healing. SamQwan was a recipient of this year's Gritty to Pretty Placemaking Grant Program. Leading up to the 2024 Halifax Regional Municipality election, we had the pleasure of meeting with many of the new councillors. We discussed active transportation (specifically transit,) affordability and housing, and how a healthy downtown drive's the whole economy. We must seize this moment to shape our future. DHBC is looking forward to working with you all 👏 Congratulations! 🙌 #DTHFXVision2030 #StrongerTogether

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and the survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Tomorrow, October 1, is Treaty Day to recognize the signing of the Peace and Friendship Treaties. October is also Mi'kmaw History Month, a month to recognize and celebrate Mi'kmaw culture, history and heritage. #DowntownHalifax #NDTR
