Last week, on National Housing Day, Nick G., SVP of EllisDon Community Builders, joined housing leaders, fellow sponsors, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow at the Habitat for Humanity Canada conference. They shared insights and strategies to address Canada’s housing crisis, and support communities in need. Russell S.
Today is #NationalHousingDay! Earlier this week, Habitat for Humanity Canada partnered with Habitat for Humanity GTA and the City of Toronto to bring together a diverse group of leaders in one of the country’s most challenging housing markets. We flipped the usual script on the housing conversation by handing the mic to Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, who led lively interviews with people creating real impact through innovative housing solutions. A packed room of housing leaders left with many key takeaways: 🏘️ Every neighbourhood needs to shoulder some of the responsibility to house people 🏘️ Smart density means making the land work a little bit harder 🏘️ Through collaboration, we can build thriving, mixed-use, mixed-income communities 🏘️ All housing providers – nonprofit and for-profit – are ready and eager to partner 🏘️ Ending homelessness relies on integrating housing and health 🏘️ Government interdependency makes housing work And from Mayor Chow, a commitment to provide land, fast approvals, collaboration, and tax and charge discounts for nonprofits. When it comes to the need for affordable housing, there is no “us” and “them". Watch all of Mayor Chow's conversations here: https://lnkd.in/gX2jfT23 Thank you to all our speakers for their inspiring insights: Michael Cooper, Dream, Andrea Adams, St Clare's Multifaith Housing Society, Naama Blonder, Smart Density, Andrew Joyner, Tricon Residential, Jason Lye, March of Dimes Canada, Andrew Boozary MD MPP, University Health Network and Keith Hambly, Fred Victor And a big thank you to our generous sponsors: Dream, EllisDon, Greenwin Corp., George Brown College, OPTIONS FOR HOMES, Vancity Community Investment Bank, WoodGreen Community Services, City of Toronto, and Habitat for Humanity GTA. Sustainability isn’t just a goal at EllisDon—it’s a commitment to creating lasting change. Earlier this month, Patrick Lalonde, Senior Manager of Digital Project Delivery, had the honour of representing EllisDon at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), the United Nations' annual climate change conference. As a panel speaker during “Decarbonizing Canada’s Built Environment: Digital Solutions for Green Building and Low-Carbon Cement,” Patrick highlighted how EllisDon leverages cutting-edge tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM) and LiDAR Scanning to: ✔️ Boost project efficiency ✔️ Enable the adaptive reuse of existing building inventory ✔️ Build smarter and more resilient communities Another key takeaway? Collaboration drives progress. Meaningful sustainability requires government, private sector innovators, academic researchers, and civil society to come together, scale solutions, and create real impact. We’re proud to be at the forefront of sustainable construction, and we’re committed to sharing our expertise and tools to help create a low-carbon, resilient future for all. EllisDon and Impulse Partners have tallied the judges’ scores from pitch day, and we are thrilled to announce the winners of our ConTech Accelerator! 👉 SALUS: A safety management software that integrates company safety programs into a comprehensive system to manage health and safety. By gathering data and information from the field, SALUS bridges the gap between the office and field operations, transforming how clients run their businesses. 👉 EHAB: Helping the construction industry better understand the impacts of climate change on projects and plan accordingly. EHAB's products assist construction companies, general contractors, designers, and clients in adapting to the climate crisis. 👉 SPECTER AUTOMATION: The first and only 3D model look-ahead planning tool that helps teams build six-week lookahead plans by visualizing data to better communicate to the field. Specter Automation offers the most natural way to plan, document, and communicate on-site processes. With over 165 submissions from around the world and only eight finalists, it was a very close decision. After making it to #Toronto and presenting to a panel of hand-picked EllisDon #knowledgeexperts—with some very pointed feedback—we are excited to work closely with these three teams! We would like to thank all the ConTech start-up companies for their submissions, and we look forward to seeing you again at our next Accelerator (or sooner!) University’s Health Network’s West Park Healthcare Centre in Toronto has reached a significant milestone, obtaining LEED Silver certification for its new hospital facility. This project saw the construction of a brand-new hospital and transformation of the site as older structures were cleared out, making way for a range of inpatient and outpatient services designed to provide top-notch rehabilitative and complex continuing care for years to come. Key sustainable highlights include: ✔ Over 25% of construction materials sourced locally, surpassing LEED requirements. ✔ Commitment to low-/non-emitting products for a healthier indoor environment. ✔ Selection of materials with low VOC emissions, focusing on occupant health. ✔ Comprehensive energy efficiency plan, which includes solar shading, high-efficiency appliances, and occupancy sensors. ✔ Water conservation measures, top-tier ventilation systems that provide 100% fresh air ✔ Green roofs covering over 50% of available roof space help reduce urban heat island effects and minimize water usage Once completed, this project will be a testament to our Cradle-to-Grave service offerings as there were multiple teams involved from start to finish – and beyond into operations.
