We are excited to announce the 17th International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction In Concrete (ICAAR 2024) will be held in Ottawa, ON, Canada, from May 18 to 24, 2024! This conference series devoted to understanding reaction mechanisms, testing methods, prediction, diagnosis and repair has been active since 1974. The last time this conference was hosted in Canada was 2000, and Ottawa in 1986. Please join us in celebrating 50 years of ICAAR in Ottawa, ON! www.icaar.ca

    L'ICAAR 2024 fut une merveilleuse occasion de rencontrer, de revoir et de discuter avec de nombreux chercheurs se dédiant aux réactions de gonflement interne du béton. Il était tout particulièrement intéressant de voir les conférences traitant des corrélations entre les essais sous conditions accélérés et les éléments grandeur natures. Pour ceux intéressés, les articles présentés à l'ICAAR 2024 sont maintenant disponibles et cinq d'entre eux ont été écrit ou coécrit par des membres de l'équipe d'expertise d'Englobe.     Je suis ravie de partager ma présentation à l’#ICAAR 2024 – 17th International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction, organisée à Ottawa du 19 au 24 mai 2024. Cette conférence internationale a rassemblé des experts et des passionnés des pathologies affectant les structures en béton du monde entier, avec qui j’ai pu particulièrement échanger sur les facteurs influençant le développement de la RSI – Réaction Sulfatique Interne des bétons. Félicitations aux organisateurs et participants, et merci à tous les contributeurs de ce projet. L’article, intitulé “Effect of cement and exposed environment differences on DEF expansion: joint investigation using constituents from Japan and France”, est disponible dans le deuxième volume du rapport de la conférence, à l’achat sur Springer.   #ICAAR #DEF #AAR #ASR

    The just-concluded #ICAAR2024 was quite a remarkable one. My colleague Rennan Medeiros and I led the pre-conference workshop on the multilevel assessment protocol for assessing the condition of Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) affected concrete. This protocol is a comprehensive approach that combines the use of the damage rating index (DRI) and stiffness damage test (SDT) as reliable tools for assessing the cause and extent of ASR-induced damage in concrete. I presented two papers during the conference and participated in the student poster contest. I am thrilled to share that I was awarded the Most Engaging Pitch, a recognition that reflects the work we have been doing in my ongoing PhD research. To sum up, the conference was an enlightening experience. It was filled with numerous learning opportunities, including several scientifically sound presentations and engaging discussions with esteemed colleagues and experts in the field. My experience at the conference has undoubtedly positioned me for enhanced professional growth, and I am particularly grateful to my supervisors; Prof. Michelle Nokken and Prof. Leandro Sanchez for their invaluable guidance. #ICAAR2024 #ustructure

    SINTEF-forsker Jan Lindgård mottok hederspris på ICAAR-kongressen om alkalireaksjoner i betong. Vi gratulerer! 🥳🎉 Den 17. ICAAR-kongressen om alkalireaksjoner i betong fant sted i Ottawa 20.-25. mai. Totalt ble det holdt 136 vitenskapelige presentasjoner. Jan Lindgård holdt et keynote-foredrag om viktigheten av pålitelig funksjonstesting. Han ble hedret for sitt arbeid og ledende internasjonale rolle innen utvikling av funksjonstesting av betong med hensyn til alkalireaksjoner. #bygg #betong #klima #teknologi #forskning ICAAR 2024

    I am very glad that I had the privilege to honour our dear late colleague Nebojsa Orbovic by presenting some of the great work he has been doing in the area of #Alkali #Aggregate #Reaction (#AAR) in #Concrete, at the 17th #ICAAR (ICAAR 2024) in Ottawa last week. Neb led an extensive #research program aimed to cover the #analytical and #experimental sides of assessing existing concrete structures subjected to the AAR phenomenon.     Indeed, concrete has a significant environmental impact – however, it is irreplaceable in many applications. Therefore, it is even more crucial that we ensure the concrete we are building is durable and that we keep our existing concrete structures "alive" as long as possible🍀📈 Together with the largest-ever Danish delegation, I spent the last week at the ICAAR 2024 conference, where we discussed how to avoid ASR in new structures (it is becoming more and more challenging as traditional supplies of good aggregates are being depleted) and how to assess the residual load-carrying capacity of existing structures affected by ASR with the absolute elite of material and structural scientists. ICAAR is a unique conference, bringing together world-leading material and structural scientists. In our contribution, we aimed to bridge these two fields of expertise. We discussed how the tensile strength of ASR-damaged concrete should be tested to ensure the results are meaningful from a structural perspective. I return home enriched with new knowledge and numerous topics to investigate, all aimed at enhancing our efforts to save thousands of ASR-damaged structures worldwide. A key takeaway is that a holistic approach is essential. Therefore, it is crucial for international material and structural scientists to collaborate on developing reliable methods to maintain the structural integrity of these structures.     Belle expérience acquise à la 17ième Conférence internationale sur la réaction alcalis-granulat (ICAAR 2024) à Ottawa! J'ai eu l'opportunité de présenter les résultats principaux de mon projet de maîtrise intitulé "Évaluation de l'endommagement actuelle et du potentiel d'endommagement par la réaction alcalis-silice (RAS) d'une structure de béton en conditions immergées". Cette présentation met définitivement un point d'exclamation sur mon parcours à la maîtrise, lequel je suis très fier des résultats produits. Merci à ma direction de recherche et tous les intervenants qui m'ont aidé lors de mes travaux. Merci à Englobe de m'avoir permis d'y assister. ___________________________________________________________________________ Great experience at the International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (ICAAR 2024) in Ottawa! I had the opportunity to present the keypoints of my master’s project, which is called “Diagnosis and Prognosis Assessment of an Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) Affected Bridge Structure in Montreal”. This experience definitely represents a highlight of the amount of work that I have put in my master’s project, in which I am very proud. I would like to thank my research direction and every contributor who helped during my work.

    Technical Services Representative at Concrete Ontario

    I am attending the 17th International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction in Ottawa. Along with a paper submitted with some of the results from my Masters thesis, ICARR is a great opportunity to stay up-to-date with the latest research on concrete durability when it comes to aggregates reacting in an alkali environment - such as concrete! The topics covered here are especially important for structures subjected to high humidity levels, such as bridges and tunnels!
