NEW BRIEF | How can the federal and provincial governments ensure access to clean, affordable, and reliable power for Canadians? IISD expert Steven Haig explains how clean power generation can deliver cheap, reliable electricity for homes and businesses while meeting their energy needs. Powering the Clean Energy Transition: Net-Zero electricity in Canada shows that by tapping into renewable energy resources—from solar power in the Prairies to offshore wind in Atlantic Canada—governments can lay the foundation for a successful energy transition by 2050. Canada’s electricity sector has reduced GHG emissions by 60% since 2005, largely due to the phasing out of coal-fired power generation. Plus, renewable energy sources are often more cost-effective—in 2023, 81% of newly commissioned renewables were cheaper than building and operating fossil fuel power, says the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Expanding the renewable industry will create new jobs—ranging from technicians and engineers who design, implement, and maintain clean energy projects to project managers and construction workers. Governments also have more control over the cost and supply of electricity generated by renewable sources—particularly amidst international or economic instability— since clean power grids aren’t reliant on globally priced fossil fuels. To turn Canada’s clean power potential into reality, the federal, provincial and territorial governments must work together to unlock the environmental and economic opportunities that Canada’s vast renewable energy resources present. 📗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/g4iNiwY3

Nature-based solutions like green corridors and urban wetlands, are emerging as a cornerstone of Kigali’s sustainable urban development. The #SUNCASA project was officially launched in Kigali, Rwanda last weekend. The two-day ceremony included a panel discussion on #NatureBasedSolutions, artistic presentations and a tree planting activity as part of the country's Umuganda Umuganda community service. In Kigali, SUNCASA is restoring nine critical sub-catchments in the lower Nyabarongo River, where steep slopes expose households to landslides and flooding. By 2026, the project aims to enhance the resilience of 975,000 residents while promoting gender equality, social inclusion, and biodiversity protection. Working with local partners like the ARCOS Network, AVEGA-Agahozo, and Rwanda Young Water Professionals, the project will plant 2 million trees in the Gasabo, Nyarugenge and Kicukiro districts. Check out this op-ed by Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva, Janina Schnick of IISD, and Ir. MARC MANYIFIKA (MSc) of WRI Africa, to learn more about #SUNCASA #NbS activities in Kigali and the project's ambitious long-term goals. International Institute for Sustainable Development reposted this
Intersectionality was a hot topic in the gender negotiations at #COP29. Unfortunately, the outcome failed to recognize the importance of understanding and addressing intersecting inequities for just and effective climate action. Outside the negotiations, however, the conversation on intersectionality as it relates to climate change is expanding, becoming more nuanced, and focused on moving from theory to practice. At Development & Climate Days, International Institute for Sustainable Development had the opportunity to co-host a conversation on intersectional approaches to climate change adaptation with Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW), Girls For Climate Action, OUT for Sustainability and Women's Environment & Development Organization. We unpacked why it matters and identified challenges and opportunities in taking it forward. My key takeaways: ➡️ Intersectional approaches are grounded in an understanding of power structures and the ways in which intersectional inequities influence vulnerability to climate change – this requires a willingness to deal with complexity. ➡️ We need to recognize the opposition to intersectional, rights-based approaches, and strategize on how to address it. ➡️ This is hard, but we believe it will lead to better outcomes from adaptation efforts. Thanks to Bridget K. Burns, Diego de Leon Segovia, Joanita Babirye, and Menka Goundan for the collaboration in organizing this event, Lulu Kitololo for the beautiful graphic report, and the #DCDays2024 organizers for the space to have this conversation!
