We design to build community.
About us
MOTIV Architects Inc. was established by Tracey Mactavish and Asher DeGroot in 2017 with a common passion that thoughtful design connects people and transforms communities. The focus of our creative practice has been developing projects at the intersection of learning, sustainable food and agriculture and accessible housing – the common infrastructure of healthy communities. We have built a reputation for beautiful, well-detailed buildings that are rooted in a site-specific approach to sustainability. We are a full-service design firm while also providing assistance to community groups and non-profits in the early organization of projects – including pre-project planning and large scale stakeholder engagement facilitation. We work with clients on a wide range of projects, at many scales: public buildings, community spaces, residential of all scales, commercial fit-outs, agricultural site planning and building design, interior design, and graphic design, for new construction and renovations. As architects and decision-makers, we are responsible for the social impact we create - in both immediate and present circumstances, as well as on a wider scale and towards the future. MOTIV is a registered Benefit Corporation in British Columbia - this means we consider social and environmental impact in addition to profit in our decision making process. Whether it is the materials we use, the people and organizations we support, or the sharing of resources and ideas - we strive to find avenues where our design practice and small business can create the greatest benefit. MOTIV achieved its JUST Label in May 2024 and B Corp Certification in August 2024 to prove out our efforts - for ourselves and to lead by example for others.

Motiv secured our JUST label… now onto BCorp certification!
Congratulations to the organizations who achieved their #JustLabel in May! The Just label is a transparency tool for organizations that are dedicated to social justice and equity! It requires reporting on a range of organization- and employee-related indicators. Each indicator outlines measurable accountabilities in order for the organization to be recognized at four levels of performance. Just organizations are joining a movement. They become part of a community of practice that embraces the complexity and interconnectedness of the world we live in, takes responsibility for its actions and impacts, holds itself to a high ethical standard in words and actions, and embraces transparency and vulnerability as essential parts of operating a company. Congratulations to this month's organizations who have joined our community and our movement! 🥳🎉 A few weeks ago, we celebrated a major milestone in the development of the Biosphere Centre! Thanks to the Federal Government's Green and Inclusive Community Building program, we've received over $7.17 million in funding. We're incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us on May 17th and for all the support for the Biosphere Centre. This net-zero facility has been a vision of the CBT and local partners for decades, and this announcement is a significant step towards making it a reality. The Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre will advance sustainable development, youth empowerment, biodiversity conservation, and community resilience. With an anticipated cost of $15 million, we've secured $9.9 million so far through grants and donations. Our capital campaign continues! To learn more or to donate, contact Michelle Hall at michelle@clayoquotbiosphere.org. Let's keep this momentum going! 💪✨ For more details about the announcement, visit https://lnkd.in/gZf3eGHR 📷 Nicole Gerbrandt #ClayoquotSoundBiosphereCentre #SustainableDevelopment #GreenBuilding #NetZero

In 1942, during the Second World War, 22,000 Japanese Canadians were forcibly uprooted, dispossessed, incarcerated/interned, and exiled from the west coast. About 8,000 Japanese Canadians, mostly residing outside of Vancouver, were transported to Hastings Park where they were detained in inhumane conditions for weeks or months. MOTIV has recently completed a feasibility for the Japanese Canadian Hastings Park Interpretive Centre (JCHPIC) Society within the livestock buildings at Hastings Park. The concept design seeks to create a powerful and somber space that envisages what it might have been like to be detained in the barns while also commemorating the significant community that was forever impacted by this series of events. The JCHPIC Society is now seeking project partners and funding.
