  • We are hiring a Gender-Affirming Care Navigator! ✨ Deadline: April 26th. The Gender-Affirming Care Navigator will support the facilitation of Planned Parenthood Ottawa's program: Affirm. Affirm launched in Spring 2024 to provide emotional and system navigation support for folks seeking gender-affirming care in Ottawa, ensuring they feel informed, supported, and advocated for. Support happens over the phone, email, or through drop-in hours. In partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO)’s Gender Diversity Services, our program supports people of all ages with a focus on children and youth. As a trans and queer led and staffed organization, PPO prioritizes the support of queer and trans youth and adults through our work, recognizing the ways that gender, sexuality, and gender expression impact someone’s sexual and reproductive healthcare. Building from the success of our Options program, Affirm offers free, pro-choice, all-options support around gender-affirming care, including contraception, pregnancy, and other forms of sexual and reproductive healthcare. Frequent forms of support include navigating: pregnancy prevention, menstrual suppression, pathways to parenthood, parenting resources, fertility preservation, accessing abortion as a trans person, accessing HRT, connecting people to gender-affirming and peer programs, accessing pelvic and gynecological exams, pap tests, cervical cancer screenings, identifying body-positive, trauma-informed, and trans-inclusive providers, and questions relating to sexual health. Lived experience as someone who has experience navigating access to gender-affirming care is a requirement for this role. • Our Executive Director Jaisie Walker 🏳️🌈 on the importance of a universal pharmacare in Canada that includes contraception 💡 People in our community and across Canada are struggling to find a family doctor with years-long waitlists, and patients are increasingly experiencing mistreatment and inadequate care from providers. Removing financial barriers is one important puzzle piece in improving contraceptive access, but we must make parallel investments in comprehensive sexual health education, inclusive training for healthcare providers, and a more resilient healthcare infrastructure that centers our most marginalized populations.

Executive Director at Planned Parenthood Ottawa | Board Member at Interval House Ottawa | Social Impact Leader | Feminist Organizer

Last week I was honoured to be invited by Marit Stiles and her team at the Ontario NDP to speak with the press and other healthcare leaders about the importance of a single-payer universal pharmacare program that includes contraceptive coverage. As sexual and reproductive health advocates, our long term goal is that everyone has the freedom and resources to choose if and when they want children, and to parent their children in safe and supportive environments. Nobody should have to choose between contraception and paying their rent, feeding their families, or buying their kids birthday presents. At Planned Parenthood Ottawa we support people every week who are unsafe at home and having their finances or their joint benefits plan monitored by an abusive partner, or newcomers to Canada who are uninsured and juggling massive life changes, finding work, and supporting families abroad. I recently talked to someone who had to save for over two years to afford an IUD. Everyone deserves access to contraception on safer, more compassionate terms without interference from employers or partners. Removing financial barriers for contraception is a tangible way to prevent and respond to the very real impacts of poverty, gender inequality, food and housing insecurity, and gender-based violence. Because Canada does not cover the costs of prescription drugs, 1 in 5 Canadians have insufficient or no drug coverage. This lack of coverage disproportionately affects marginalized communities: youth, disabled folks, Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities, and recent immigrants to Canada. The introduction of a single-payer universal pharmacare program that includes contraceptive coverage is a historic victory that will be both life changing and life saving. It’s crucial that Ontario gets on board. Thank you to Marit, Joel Harden, Chandra Pasma, and all of the community advocates for the great discussion, and Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre for hosting! #pharmacare
