I help CPGs increase sales and improve velocity through design testing. 👀

🌍 The Butterfly Effect in Package Design 🦋 In marketing, small changes can create a ripple effect. I've had this in conversations recently, and I want you to consider it regarding package design. A tweak in color, a slight font adjustment, or a subtle graphic can make all the difference. That tiny change catches more eyes on the shelf ➡️ more people understand the message ➡️ more people pick it up ➡️ and, eventually, more people buy. If you're a small brand, imagine that 0.1% of shoppers notice your package (1 in every 1000 shoppers). Increasing that number to 0.2% is a seemingly small change, but if double the people see it AND it's more understandable, it can quickly double or triple your velocity. A package needs to be noticed AND understood; luckily, eye tracking can help test and improve both! Like the butterfly effect, each design decision can impact behavior on a big scale. Next time you evaluate packaging, remember that the smallest details can lead to a powerful chain reaction. 📈 #ThisMovieCameOut20YearsAgo #Marketing #PackageDesign #AshtonKutcher #ButterflyEffect #ConsumerBehavior #Branding #GrowWithRich

I've spent years watching hundreds of thousands of people shop—across thousands of aisles, in markets and stores of all sizes. Whether through cutting-edge tech like eye tracking or hands-on methods like manual observations and staged aisles, one thing remains clear: the way people shop is endlessly fascinating. Through tens of thousands of interviews—from Abilene, Texas, or North Battleford, Saskatchewan, to the bustling streets of LA, New York, and Toronto—I’ve come to one powerful realization: Behavioral data is the ultimate predictor of success. • When testing new designs, signage, displays, or planograms, it’s not just about what people say in questionnaires—it’s about what they do. Over my 15 years in this field, behavioral insights have consistently outperformed traditional methods. The challenge? High costs and long timelines. That’s why I founded Rich Insights Research—to make these valuable insights accessible to small and mid-sized brands. We streamline the process, so you can confidently test design options and turn data into action without breaking the bank. The right study can be a game-changer for your brand and your designers. Are you ready to uncover what really drives customer decisions? Let’s talk. #PackageDesignTesting #DesignTesting #PackageDesignTesting #ShopperInsights #ConsumerBehavior #GrowWithRich

🌍 Sustainable Packaging: The Next Big Shift in Consumer Expectations 🌍 Consumers increasingly expect eco-friendly packaging and businesses that don’t adapt risk falling behind. 📦♻️ At Rich Insights, we’ve been tracking the latest trends in sustainable packaging and leveraging advanced eye-tracking technology to better understand what consumers see on shelves. Here’s what we’re seeing: 1️⃣ Minimalist Designs: Sustainable packaging is all about less waste, and the design reflects that. Clean, simple designs resonate with consumers who value eco-consciousness. 2️⃣ Eco-Friendly Materials: Companies are shifting towards compostable, biodegradable, or recyclable packaging materials—and consumers are willing to pay a premium, this is much more effective when the design cues shoppers into the sustainability of the package/product. 3️⃣ Eye-Tracking Data: Our eye-tracking research shows that sustainable claims on packaging can increase engagement. While price is an important decision driver, eco-friendly packaging can encourage a balanced decision towards the eco-friendly brand. 🔍 How is your brand adapting to the demand for sustainable packaging? Let's discuss how data-driven consumer testing can help you make informed decisions aligning with market trends and sustainability goals. #SustainablePackaging #EyeTracking #ConsumerTesting #B2BMarketing #PackagingTrends #GrowWithRich

How Eye Tracking Saved a Major Canadian CPG's Packaging Design A few years back, I had the opportunity to work with a leading Canadian CPG company that was about to launch a new package design in a category in which they held a major shelf presence. Their new design had gone through multiple iterations and countless focus groups, and they were confident it was a winner. They engaged us to verify their design using our eye-tracking methodology. We orchestrated a true-to-life shopping scenario in our warehouse, replicating store sections with actual products. Over a span of two weeks, we had 300 participants navigate these sections—half exposed to the original packaging, and the other half to the new design. The results were crystal clear: the new package design, despite all the focus group approval, was getting completely lost on the shelf. Sales would have likely plummeted had it gone to market. Armed with these insights, the company postponed the launch and re-designed the package, this time with a clear understanding of how it would perform in a real retail environment. The new design performed very well and was the one they decided to launch (despite all the 'success' the other design had). Experiences like this have reinforced a critical lesson: investing in eye tracking is investing in the success of your product on the shelf. It’s not just about what looks good on paper—it’s about what gets noticed in the real world. It's also the reason I continue to work with eye tracking today. #PackagingDesign #EyeTracking #CPG #ConsumerInsights #RetailStrategy #GrowWithRich

---------- Is your brand name taking up too much space on your packaging? ---------- Keeping the logo or brand name subtle does benefit a brand, allowing other elements like product benefits, flavors, or ingredients to take center stage. Eye-tracking studies often show that first-time buyers are more drawn to bold visuals, clear product benefits, and flavors that resonate with their needs at that moment rather than the brand name itself. This makes it essential to prioritize what customers care about most when scanning shelves. Look at brands like Belgian Boys, focusing more on the product type and imagery than the brand name. Minor Figures, with its playful artwork and simplicity leading the visual hierarchy, or La Presserie, where the packaging emphasizes ingredients over the brand. Even Welly, a brand my kids love because they love to collect the bandage tins, minimizes its branding in favor of bold colors and creative visuals. These brands show how a less prominent logo can shift attention to what matters—what's inside the package. Eye-tracking research shows that packaging design that guides customers to product benefits or exciting elements can directly impact purchasing decisions. The brand's prominence is much less critical when targeting new customers, especially as a newer brand. However, you don’t want to roll out a design that’s too disruptive; doing so could alienate your loyal customers who rely on some familiarity to feel connected to the product. Are there any brand minimizers I didn't mention that you think are worth a callout!? #RethinkBrand #PackageDesign #EmphasizeBenefits #RefocusAttention #PackageDesignChange #EyeTracking #GrowWithRich

You're looking at a Refrigerated Snacking section from The Fresh Market. I also showed this image to 100 other people online, and these are the results. The numbers you see here are part of the Rich Insights Research Visibility Impact Index. This score is a robust measure that considers the percentage of shoppers who noticed a product, the average time it took them to notice that product, and the percentage of shoppers who noticed that particular brand first. The Perfect Snacks has ideal placement and a large presence. Despite its less favorable placement, Belgian Boys demonstrates resilience with its vibrant packaging and prominent brand block, offering hope for overcoming obstacles. You might ask yourself why Honey Mama's, with their 3 facings, breaks through so well. In this case, they have the fortunate placement that is further enhanced with empty spaces on both sides, which works to their advantage to help draw attention. Mid-Day Squares is at a disadvantage here as they only have two flavors on the shelf, and they are the two flavors with the most neutral colors. Adding that new blue flavor would have definitely had an impact. Some other brands featured on the shelf: Petit Pot NoBaked Cookie Dough DEUX The Cookie Dough Cafe Clio Snacks Sweet Loren's Eat to Heal Once Upon a Farm Kelsi's Kitchen French Squirrel La Fermière US Hail Merry Snacks Nelly's We can take images like this and learn what drives standout and engagement in your category. If you're re-designing, testing a new variation is as simple as taking this image, swapping in your new package, and then comparing old vs new. Does the new package move the bar, or is it off-target? Eye tracking will tell you with complete honesty. #PackageDesign #PackDesignTesting #EyeTracking #DesignResearch #MRX #GrowWithRich
