The Renovate the Public Hearing Initiative (RPHI) recently released two new video projects. The team worked with Uytae Lee of About Here videos to produce The Problem with Public Hearings, an exploration of the pros, cons and pitfalls of public hearings and how we can better involve the public in land use decisions: https://lnkd.in/gjYbrVz5 One innovative alternative is explored in the Voices of Gibsons Residents film. This short documentary shares the story of the Town of Gibsons Residents Assembly, a groundbreaking community assembly that offers a new model for land use and community planning based on meaningful, upstreamed public engagement: https://lnkd.in/gE8cQR-e

Last month, we honoured Judge Abby Abinanti’s transformative approaches in providing a model for criminal-justice reform through the Jack P. Blaney Award for Dialogue. When asked about the award, Judge Abby says, "This could not be any more perfect." On November 19, we held an evening ceremony to present Judge Abby with the award. The ceremony was part of a week-long schedule, organized with support by SFU Public Square, which included Judge Abby participating in a National Restorative Justice Week gathering of practitioners, attending the Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week’s Red Dress event, meeting with the Indian Residential School Survivors Society and visiting the Kwìkwèxwelhp Healing Village – a minimal security facility for Indigenous men grounded in traditional teachings. She also visited SFU to meet with the community’s Indigenous students, Elders, faculty and staff at the Indigenous Student Centre's lunch event. We're looking forward to these conversations in the new year. Interested in attending? Please complete this expression of interest form: https://lnkd.in/g4EtbBNC More info on the new workshop series below ⬇️ #workshop #socialconnections #housing #planners #affordability
🔍 Calling all planners working on housing, community planning, and development policy in Canada! We have an incredible opportunity to share. We’re teaming up with Happy Cities and Renewable Cities to host **three** online workshops in 2025, for planners to gain practical tools to unlock the social potential of multi-unit housing. These workshops will tackle two fundamental questions: 💭 What design principles and strategies can enhance social wellbeing in multi-unit housing? 💭 How can planners design and implement policy to enable these social features—while maintaining affordability? These workshops bring together years of research from Hey Neighbour Collective and Happy Cities, building on our recently released Building Social Connections Toolkit. Designed as a series, each will build on the previous sessions. Participants will hear from guest speakers, engage in small breakout group discussions, and connect with planners and professionals across Canada. **All workshops will be hosted online via Zoom.** Thanks to our amazing funders, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Société canadienne d'hypothèques et de logement(SCHL) and the Max Bell Foundation, these workshops are fully free! (PS - did we mention these sessions will be eligible for professional development credits? 😊) Visit our website for all the details and if you're in, please fill out an expression of interest form so we can reserve you a seat. https://lnkd.in/gtRvHBTV #workshop #planners #socialconnected #affordability #developmentpolicy #communityplanning #housingdesign

Our executive director Aftab Erfan recently joined TELUS Talks podcast to discuss the art of constructive dialogue and how we can build space for healthy conversations in our own lives. Listen now: https://lnkd.in/gzTMMN9C

I seem to be in the podcast-guesting phase of my life, and so I present to you this recording of a recent appearance on TELUS Talks hosted by the legendary Tamara Taggart. (17 minutes on 2X playback speed.) We got to talking about what it means to have real dialogue (as opposed to whatever this is we're doing on social media) and what it's like to run a Centre for Dialogue. I love that I got to mention the Cranky Uncle app, the infamous mediation story of the two sisters fighting over a juicy orange, Aaron Lao's mnemonic device for surviving difficult conversations, my favourite Hannah Arendt definition of thinking, and the problem with banning books, all within a few minutes. Out On Screen/Out In Schools also got a special shout-out as my charity of choice. Thanks Tamara and Telus for your support of the good things.

Congratulations to Judge Abby Abinanti, the first woman from a tribe admitted to bar in California and Chief Judge of the Yurok Tribe, for being this year's recipient of the Jack P. Blaney Award for Dialogue. Judge Abby's work in justice reform and Indigenous issues has many parallels to B.C. https://ow.ly/PqRe50UakVP SFU Public Square SFU's Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue
