I was out flying a few Spexigons in Ottawa the other day, and that inspired me to write a bit about Spexi. Theres a few things here that should inform all of us about how we can better grapple with Canada's productivity struggle and how smart government interventions can help generate innovation. (For the unintiated, Spexi is an app that allows gig workers to fly drones for cash by collecting aerial imagery used in infrastructure monitoring. The app uses made-in-Canada smarts to save data consumers (often municipalities) money and gives droners a new paid opportunity while generating a healthy spread in the middle that allows the company to live and grow.) From a public policy perspective, I like these kinds of productivity-centred innovations that work two-sided markets. They make us all a bit richer by creating new value and efficiency, the benefit of which is spread around the user community. The data here is perhaps most useful for things like infrastructure maintenance and monitoring, something that makes preventative maintenance of public infrastructure easier and more cost effective. So in this case, I made a few bucks flying in Ottawa, and somewhere down the line, I'm hoping this will save me another few bucks in Ottawa municipal taxes too. With a business model that depends so heavily on big infrastructure owners, early reference clients are super important for start ups like this, and back in 2022, Spexi got a big break when it landed a contract with the Innovative Solutions Canada program which is designed to democratize access to Government of Canada procurement and make it accessible to startups. During my tenure at Transport Canada, we worked closely with Spexi on a variety of use cases pertaining to transportation and natural infrastructure monitoring. It was a partnership that helped Spexi to grow in early phases, to work with the department responsible for drone safety and regulation to make their product as safe and proactively compliant as possible. On the government productivity side, it really helped accelerate Transport Canada's own pursuit of radical efficiency in how the department conducts its core transportation infrastructure inspection and transportation safety functions. I could go on for a while about how this was a mutually productive and fruitful project for government and industry alike, but what I really hope you take away from this dear reader is that in spite of some of the productivity doom and gloom we read about days, that we dont all lose sight of the fact that these types of gov-industry partnerships can happen, are frequently successful when they do, and are going to be a big part if developing Canada's innovation economy.
