About us

The Winnipeg Humane Society is a registered charity and non-profit, volunteer-based organization funded primarily by donations and bequests. Mission: To protect animals from suffering and to promote their welfare and dignity Vision: Animals are treated humanely The Winnipeg Humane Society is one of the oldest community service organizations in Winnipeg and the oldest and largest animal shelter and welfare organization in Manitoba. Founded over 115 years ago, the organization has come a long way from the days of housing animals on the main floor of a house while the shelter secretary lived upstairs. Originally formed as the “Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Women, Children and Animals” the shelter’s board and founding members consisted of a broad cross section of Winnipeg citizens from businessmen, to lawyers, to progressively minded women. Over the years, as other agencies were formed to support women and children, The WHS reorganized with the goal of focusing on animals. After over 30 years of running the shelter out of a house on Logan Ave, The WHS relocated to a new building on Kent Street in the late 1960’s. Almost 40 years later in 2007, a new, state-of-the-art facility was built to accommodate the 8.500 animals that cross through the shelter doors annually.

  • Pint size Frankie is looking for his family! He's smart, loves treats, and is fiercely loyal. He'd like to be the only pet in the home, and isn't a huge fan of young kids. If you want to give this 3 year old boy a good life, and help him be his best self, call our adoptions line at 204-982-2035.

  • Today is National Bird Day, and we can't go without an update on Kevin the Canary and his human, Kevin (the poet). They're thriving, and the Kevins are really living it up. "In a glitzy cage with a mirror ball bright, This canary can groove all right! Feathers a-flutter; yellow and bold! He struts and twirls with a heart of gold. With tiny feet tapping in rhythm and rhyme, He chirps to the beat, keeping perfect time. A disco bird! In neon light’s glow! His moves are fierce, his pace never slow. Kevin spins with style, his wings spread wide, Gliding and glimmering with absolute pride. From perch to perch, he sways away, Dancing and carefree. Troubles at bay." - Kevin (with assistance from Kevin, likely) 🧡💜

  • We have some final 2024 business to tend to - our Fabulous Foster Feature for December: Stacy! It feels particularly special because, above and beyond being one of our most dog-savvy and big-hearted fosters, she took our girl Freyja (who has been in care for most of her life) home for the holidays to give her a relaxing break from the shelter. Freyja comes back next week to keep up the search for her family, and we know her time with Stacy has changed her life (and showcased what a good girl she is in a home ❤️🐶). If you've watched any of our Sniff n' Shop features with Global Pet Foods on Grant and our adoptables, Stacy's behind those, too! She's been an incredible advocate for all of our dogs, particularly the behaviour cases, and works hard to help us find forever homes for all of them. Thank you Stacy, for all you do for the dogs, and for us 💜🧡!

  • Super friendly Bugs (and his pals) need your help! We're looking for donations of small shred paper and timothy hay for our critters, and tuna (some of the dogs need some coaxing to take their much-needed meds). If you can part with any of these items, please drop them off to 45 Hurst Way! Reminder, we're closing early tomorrow, and are closed the 1st ☺️.

  • Some animals end up in the shelter time and time again because of bad luck - that was Garfield's story. He was in and out of care, had gained a lot of weight, but was still playful and oh so loving. Finally, his forever family found him, and now he's living his best (and healthiest) life. You did this! It's with your support we can provide care until our animals find their homes, and you still have time to give and see it on your 2024 tax receipt 😉. Donate, change lives, and watch all of our incredible alumni stories: https://ow.ly/J1Rw50UxX7X

  • "Update on Gypsy (formerly Angel)! She's doing so well! She loves kids and cats...She's goofy, extremely intuitive, and smart. She knows how to do some tricks. When I say "cookie," she runs to her kennel and lays down right away. She loves running in the snow as it is her first winter with a missing leg. I feel like I've always had her in my life, and it's only been a little over 7 months. She's a natural therapy dog. I'm autistic and she senses when I need help. I've had meltdowns, and she's comforted and soothed me, which has calmed me down. I would not have thought that a beautiful spirit like hers could be part of my life. How did I get so lucky to have come across her path? I love her, and we [got] to spend our first Christmas together. 💕"
