Did you know that we provide metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) assessment services and mitigation designs? ML/ARD assessments are mandated for infrastructure projects in British Columbia - and we have the people and equipment available to help. Thurber's Paul Wilson, M.Sc., P.Geo., Victoria Smith M.Sc, P.Geo, and Matthew Bonin attended this week's BC MEND ML/ARD Annual Workshop in Vancouver. It was a great opportunity to learn from other leading ML/ARD practitioners as they shared challenges and best practices in ML/ARD. Learn more about our ML/ARD services here: https://lnkd.in/gYiP4hny

The CEA Young Professionals conference is held every year. It's a great chance for young professionals in the industry to come together to learn valuable communication, relationship intelligence, and leadership skills. CEA president (and Thurber president), Chris Workman, participated in a panel discussion on "Finding your voice". The panel involved three panelists at different points in their careers and explored the journey of building confidence and mastering effective communication. Thurber was a bronze sponsor of the conference.

WiSER supports women and under-represented individuals who are graduate students and early-career professionals in the science, technology, engineering, and research sphere. As a proud sponsor of WiSER, Thurber attended their recent industry mixer where we connected with other STEM professionals, students, and early-career professionals. A big thank you to Jacalyn Nysetvold and one of our most recent summer students Harman Panesar for representing Thurber at the event.

🙌 We are excited to share that we won two awards at the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies - Saskatchewan Awards of Distinction ceremony last night. We took home both a Brian Eckel Award of Excellence for geotechnical engineering and geohazards, and the Brian Eckel Pinnacle Award - both for our work on the Hwy 369 Landslide Repair in rural Saskatchewan. This project was delivered for our client the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways. Thurber was the prime consultant and provided geotechnical investigation and design services. CIMA+ provided structural engineering expertise, EDI Environmental Dynamics Inc provided the environmental assessment, Kichton Contracting Ltd. was the construction contractor, and GeoVerra provided LiDAR survey. Thank you to everyone involved in this successful project. 🎉 Watch the video below for a summary of our work: https://lnkd.in/giMQpcr2

Last week, Edmonton hosted the 69th Annual Canadian Technical Asphalt Association Conference. Thurber's Adam LeBlanc, Jacalyn Nysetvold, Don Stefanyk, and Abdul Sadiq-Zadah, M.Eng., P.Eng. attended. Thurber was proud to be a Gold sponsor of the event. Some of the common themes of the conference included sustainability and quality of pavements, use of recycled materials, cold-in-place recycling, low temperature cracking, and rutting distress. It was a great opportunity to expand our knowledge about asphalt pavements and build our connections within the industry.

This past weekend, Thurber was pleased to participate in the Queen's Engineering Competition, both as a sponsor and as a judge. We enjoyed meeting the next generation of brilliant engineers.

Metal leaching/acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) is a naturally occurring environmental issue that can be made significantly worse when susceptible rock is disturbed by excavation, blasting or crushing etc. Disturbance can expose sulfide and other minerals in the rock to moisture and oxygen initiating oxidation (i.e. rusting), potentially resulting in the generation of sulfuric acid and the release of high concentrations of sulfate and dissolved metals. We are well-versed in providing ML/ARD assessments and mitigation design. Pictured is Thurber's Dominique Austin onsite assessing rock for ML/ARD content.
