UBC Department of Medicine reposted this
On November 8th, we recognize Indigenous Veteran’s Day, both to commemorate Indigenous veterans for their military service and to remember the barriers Indigenous people faced serving in the Canadian forces. According to Veterans Affairs Canada, as many as 12,000 First Nations, Metis, and Inuit served throughout the conflicts of the twentieth century, but it wasn’t until 1995 that Indigenous people could lay wreaths at the National War Memorial. Indigenous people who served were also often enfranchised and didn’t receive the same benefits as other Canadian veterans. Today we reflect on those who lost their lives in service and honour those who fought for their rights alongside fighting for Canada.
