Congratulations to Venture Capital Association of Alberta (VCAA) members Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC) and Accelerate Fund on the launch of the fourth Accelerate Fund with an anchor investment of $15 million! Building on the success of the Accelerate Fund program started in 2012, Accelerate Fund IV will provide Alberta technology entrepreneurs focused in life sciences, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence and other emerging opportunities with a continued source of startup capital. Accelerate Fund IV will be managed by Yaletown Partners, the same investment team that oversaw Fund II and Fund III. In the words of AEC CEO Kristina Williams: “As an anchor investor in the Accelerate Fund since 2012, AEC has supported investment in 46 Alberta-based technology companies, helping those teams to grow their business from the pre-seed or seed stage to the next critical milestone or stage of investment. The Accelerate Fund has been fundamentally important to the Alberta tech ecosystem, increasing the odds of startup success, fostering job creation and helping to mature the venture capital landscape in our province.” https://lnkd.in/gEX-PsA3 Nate Glubish, Kris Barker, Alan Campbell, Milanne Desfosses, Christiana Manzocco, Arden Tse, Yasmine Al-Hussein, Brad Johns, Shruti Sharma, David Edmonds, Neil Frizzell

We’re exited to announce a new chapter in VCAA’s journey as we welcome George Damian as our new Executive Director! As a recognized community builder within Alberta’s tech and innovation ecosystems, George has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing our members. A huge thank you to Omi Velasco for her dedication over the past few years, growing our vibrant community and launching numerous initiatives that have strengthened VCAA’s impact. Please join us in welcoming George. We’re excited for all that’s ahead and grateful to have him leading the way!
It is with incredible excitement and a deep sense of gratitude that I share my new role as Executive Director of the Venture Capital Association of Alberta (VCAA)! Having been a part of the tech and innovation ecosystem in Alberta for nearly a decade, I could not be more thrilled to serve our community in this capacity. For those who may not be familiar with VCAA (yet!), we are the province's leading industry association for venture capital (VC), private equity (PE), and early-stage investors. As such, the VCAA focuses on three key pillars: 1️⃣ COMMUNITY: Facilitating dialogue among members and fostering connections with the broader innovation ecosystem through peer-to-peer learning opportunities, networking events and strategic partnerships. 2️⃣ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Delivering programming and events that expand members’ knowledge of industry trends and best practices. 3️⃣ ADVOCACY: Promoting the value of the VC industry for Alberta’s economy by engaging government, media, and regulatory bodies to support policy decisions that nurture the sector’s growth. As I take on this new role, I want to express my sincere thanks to the incomparable Omi Velasco for building the VCAA into a world-class organization, and for her continued support in ensuring a smooth transition as we ramp up to our 25th Anniversary in 2025. We have a lot of exciting new initiatives in store for next year which we are keen to share with you in the weeks and months to come. In addition to Omi, the VCAA's Board, led by Chair Alan Campbell, has done a tremendous job of providing a solid foundation for us to build upon in the years to come. I look forward to working with them to continue to catalyze innovation across the province I am so proud to call home. I also want to emphasize the VCAA's commitment to supporting its community, so if there's anything you would like to share in terms of feedback, please email me at george@vcaa.ca so that we can arrange a time to discuss.
