Today, on International Day for Women & Girls in Science, we celebrate the brilliant minds advancing ovarian cancer research. 💡💙 One of them being Dr. Elizabeth Dolan (University of Nottingham N/LAB) who, in collaboration with Ovacome - the ovarian cancer support charity, is using AI to analyze shopping data for early ovarian cancer risk detection. Following World Cancer Day, we're highlighting our partner World Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Together, we’re raising awareness of ovarian cancer—the deadliest of women's cancer—which is projected to affect nearly 500,000 people annually by 2050. The Coalition recently released a white paper addressing the critical challenges and innovative strategies required to tackle hereditary ovarian cancer globally. One key recommendation is a call for strategies to support the implementation of population-wide genetic testing. In the US alone, universal genetic testing could prevent hundreds of thousands of cancer cases and prevent more than 40,000 deaths over the course of a lifetime. https://bit.ly/4jIkoCU #WorldCancerDay #UnitedByUnique

Thank you, Illumina, for highlighting our story and helping raise awareness on #WorldCancerDay! #UnitedbyUnique #NoWomanLeftBehind
Today is World Cancer Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about cancer, encouraging its prevention, and mobilizing action to address this global epidemic. At Illumina, our work is at the forefront of these efforts, driving advancements in research, early detection, and personalized care. Today, I'm also eager to share about our partner, the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Partnering with its 200+ member organizations worldwide, the Coalition is committed to ensuring that everyone impacted by ovarian cancer has the best possible chance of survival and quality of life, regardless of where they live. The Coalition generates evidence to fill gaps in the understanding of how ovarian cancer impacts patients, their loved ones, and the health care systems serving them. The Coalition believes the most powerful advocacy is evidence-led: “The only way you can change policy and drive progress is to back up your calls to action with strong evidence,” says Clara MacKay, CEO of the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition. #WorldCancerDay #UnitedByUnique

According to the world economic forum, "9 conditions account for one-third of women’s health gaps across data availability, care delivery and effectiveness of care: menopause, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), endometriosis, maternal hypertensive disorder, post-partum haemorrhage, migraine, ischaemic heart disease, cervical cancer and breast cancer. Addressing gaps in these nine conditions could unlock 27 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) annually, according to the research – equivalent to adding 2.7 healthy days per year, per woman. It would also yield $1 trillion in annual global GDP by 2040." The Global Alliance for Women’s Health was launched a year ago to improve research, financing and policy advocacy for women’s health. The WHIT platform was also launched to deliver insights and achievable metrics to identify and address disparities in women’s health. Like me, quite a few people around the world work with organization like World Ovarian Cancer Coalition to bring out the need to focus on women's health. Mainly because the mass of the gynaecological issues faced by women are not really different issues. They are all linked. Hopefully, the different organizations can work together to bring govt. focus on this long neglected and much needed topic. Kudos to champions like Tilly Metz for holding the fort in places where plans can turn into actions. 🖖👏
It's time to pay attention to women's health! Yesterday, I relaunched a group in the European Parliament – MEPs for Women's Health. Together with my fellow MEPs from progressive political groups we will make sure that women's health is not overlooked anymore. Why? Because women spend on average 25% more time in ill-health than men, their specific health needs are not considered, side effects of medicines are often different and dangerous, and women are not equally represented in research. This initiative aims to change that. Our goal is to ensure that women's health is given the priority and the tailored solutions it needs.
