About us

We are a charity dedicated to nurturing the inherent potential in individuals just like you. Because at the YMCA, we believe that when we create the conditions for individuals to thrive, it results in stronger, connected communities for all. For over 170 years, we’ve cared for kids, shaped leaders for tomorrow, helped generations of people come together for support, and provide experiences that last a lifetime. As a charitable, non-profit organization, we are committed to providing equal opportunities for all, in welcoming spaces that are both nurturing and fun — a community of shared responsibilities, where children and families thrive.

  • Tek’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Arriving in Canada as a newcomer, she faced incredible challenges—but everything changed when she found the YMCA. At our Community Y on Gottingen Street, Tek discovered a place to belong, programs that helped her grow, and a community that lifted her up. Tek has given back as a leader in our afterschool program, giving back to the next generation of children and youth. "The YMCA is a profound and transformative force. My own journey from a refugee camp to the YMCA and now to a role where I support others is a testament to how belonging can foster growth and resilience." – Tek This holiday season, you can be part of stories like Tek’s. Your donation to the No Person Left Behind campaign helps deliver over 40 youth programs, 2,600 swimming lessons, and reach 50,000 people daily across Nova Scotia, ensuring everyone has a chance to thrive. Together, we can create more opportunities for youth, families, and newcomers to find hope and belonging. 👉 Donate today and help us make a difference: ymcahfx.ca/give/ #YMCA #CommunityImpact #NoPersonLeftBehind #Halifax #SupportLocal #YouthLeadership #GiveBack

  • Last night, the Community YMCA hosted its 7th Annual Holiday Dinner!   Hundreds of community members of all ages came together to enjoy a free turkey dinner, share laughter, and celebrate with family and friends. Moments like these remind us of the power of community and belonging.   A heartfelt thank you to Medavie for sponsoring this incredible event, all the organizations that contributed to the meal, and to the 40+ volunteers who poured their time and energy into making it such a success.   This evening embodied inclusivity and the spirit of the holiday season. #CommunityYMCA #HolidayDinner  #Belonging #Halifax #HalifaxYmca #NovaScotia
