Did you catch the recent interview on CBC Information Morning? Portia Clark had a wonderful conversation with Miia Suokonautio, Executive Director of YWCA Halifax, about our significant strides in affordable housing in 2024 with three big housing programs opened and our ambitious plans for the near future in HRM. Tune in to hear about our plans for 2025 and the next 5 years! A YWCA housing participant recently shared how she feels having stable housing: “I am safe in my house, I have a safe space where I can retreat, re-group and go out and face it again for another day” *Chloe- YWCA Halifax Housing Participant Take a moment to listen in! https://lnkd.in/egcdhNFb

35 years ago, 14 young women were murdered at Polytechnique Montréal (December 6, 1989). As we mourn their loss, we reaffirm our commitment to fight the hatred and misogyny that led to this tragedy and persists today. In Canada and around the world, women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals face unacceptable violence and discrimination. Gender-based violence disproportionately impacts those facing multiple intersecting grounds of oppression. Indigenous women are six times more likely to be killed than non-Indigenous women. Women with disabilities are almost twice as likely to experience violent crime and sexual assault. A third of trans and non-binary people of colour have been sexually assaulted, compared to a quarter of non-racialized trans people. This is unacceptable. Everyone has the right to be free from violence and to have their dignity respected. As we remember the 14 women killed, remember that your voice matters in the fight against gender-based and intimate partner violence. We remember: Geneviève Bergeron Hélène Colgan Nathalie Croteau Barbara Daigneault Anne-Marie Edward Maud Haviernick Maryse Laganière Maryse Leclair Anne-Marie Lemay Sonia Pelletier Michèle Richard Annie St-Arneault Annie Turcotte Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz If you can, join a vigil and connect with like-minded individuals. In the HRM, here are two gatherings: 4:15 PM, Anglican Cathedral Church of All Saints (1340 Cathedral Lane, Halifax): Outdoor vigil and walk starting in the Great Hall (accessible via the parking lot door). Indoor gathering from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the Great Hall with food and guest speakers on the Calls to Action on the Epidemic of Gender-based Violence. Hosted by Survivors for Change and Empowerment NS, Shelter Movers Nova Scotia, Persons Against NST (non-state torture), Bryony House, and Kristina Fifield Trauma Therapy & Consulting. 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM, Halifax Public Gardens (meet at the fountain): March and candlelight vigil hosted by the Avalon Centre and THANS.

Debra Paris Perry, YWCA's Senior Peer Outreach Worker spoke at our recent 150th anniversary event about a time in her life when she was struggling to find her footing and how finding secure housing was a monumental moment when she could finally call somewhere home. Her quote "There's no substitute for having your own key and a place to lay your head" had all 200 of us at the 150 celebration nodding in agreement. Let's change the lives for so many in the HRM. Help us build affordable housing. Imagine a Halifax where no one has to sleep on the streets, where families can stay together, and where individuals can rebuild their lives with dignity. This vision can become a reality with your help. Please donate today bit.ly/YWCAHalifaxDonate YWCA Halifax can accept a donation by e-transfer. We are the solution. This Giving Tuesday, consider the gift of trust. Donating to YWCA is investing in our dedication to transforming lives and communities in Halifax. Over the next five years, we aim to develop 369 affordable housing units, creating safe and supportive homes for approximately 1,000 individuals. We believe that the pathway to housing stability involves more than just a roof over one’s head. Together, we are crafting a comprehensive approach that not only provides housing but also integrates vital support services, including child care, job training, and financial literacy programs. Over the next five years, the YWCA Halifax aims to build 369 affordable housing units, creating homes for approximately 1,000 individuals. Please join us in making this bold goal a reality. Now, more than ever, we need your help to change the future of homelessness. Let’s imagine together, a neighborhood where children are free to play. A place where families live without fear of eviction, and individuals can focus on their hopes and goals. A place where each person has a key to their front door. Now, join us in making this vision a reality. Donate today (or tomorrow!) to contribute to making our community a better place for everyone https://lnkd.in/eV58Nk-K (the link is also in our bio)
