Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we’re standing in solidarity with all those affected by gender-based violence. Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and remains largely unreported. The impacts of violence against women and girls are far-reaching and can have adverse effects on psychological, sexual and reproductive health. We must work together to prevent gender-based violence. Today commemorates the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji (1621-1675), the ninth of the Ten Sikh Gurus. Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual observance that honours the memory of the transgender people whose lives have been lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. This day was founded in 1999 by transgender advocate, Gwendolyn Ann Smith, as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998.
