Meet the 2023-2025 Master Jury! David Basulto is an architect and editor. He graduated from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (2006). In 2006, he founded ArchDaily and its global network of sites in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese. ArchDaily is one of the most important and influential media outlets for architecture and interior design. Its mission is to “Inspire, connect and empower the architecture and design community for a better built environment”. ArchDaily is the world’s most visited architecture website today, with offices and operations in Chile, China, Mexico, Brazil, Germany and Switzerland. As of May 2020, ArchDaily is part of DAAily platforms owned by the NZZ Media Group in Switzerland. Basulto was the editor-in-chief until 2024. Basulto is a member of the Endeavor Foundation in New York and of the Advisory Council of the Architecture, Art & Design School at TECNOLÓGICO DE MONTERREY University in Mexico. Curator of the Nordic Countries Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, Basulto lectures widely in Europe, and North and Latin America. He has also served as jury for several awards, prizes and design competitions in Latin America, North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Basulto has been chosen as one of Chile’s 100 Young Leaders and received the National Award of Innovation from the Government of Chile in 2013. Join us on 20 February at 7pm CET for the lecture ‘New Currents: Yasmeen Lari and Marina Tabassum’, organised by the Nieuwe Instituut, in partnership with Delft University of Technology, part of the New Currents research project that looks at the history, alliances and ideas around the Indian Ocean. Internationally renowned architects marina tabassum and Yasmeen Lari will explain how their humanistic, holistic, and activist approaches empower marginalised communities facing climate challenges, conflict, and flood risks. Yasmeen Lari, first woman architect of Pakistan, was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 2023 for her humanitarian work. 📅 Save the Date / 20.03.25 Conférence de marina tabassum Architecte et enseignante originaire de Dhaka au Bangladesh, elle est reconnue internationalement pour son travail dans le domaine de l’architecture. Son approche, qui inclut la recherche, l’enseignement et la pratique, est considérée comme un modèle pour le XXIe siècle. Elle est notamment connue pour son concept d’« Architecture of Relevance », forme de réponse aux contextes dans lesquels elle intervient et qui intègre des aspects écologiques, climatiques, culturels et historiques. Son projet le plus célèbre, la mosquée Bait Ur Rouf (Dhaka), a été récompensé par le prestigieux Prix Aga Khan d’Architecture en 2016 et a été classé parmi les 25 meilleurs bâtiments d’après-guerre par le New York Times. Après avoir obtenu un diplôme d’architecture avec mention en 1995, elle fonde Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA) en 2005, après une décennie de partenariat avec URBANA. Elle a reçu de nombreuses distinctions prestigieuses, dont la Médaille Soane (Royaume-Uni), la Médaille d’Or de l’Académie d’Architecture (France) et le Prix Arnold Brunner (États-Unis). En plus de sa pratique architecturale, Marina Tabassum a enseigné dans plusieurs universités, dont la Harvard Graduate School of Design et l’Université de Toronto au sein de la Faculté d’Architecture, de paysage et de design. Meet the 2023-2025 Steering Committee! Meisa Batayneh is the founder and principal architect of maisam architects & engineers, which was established in 1986 with offices in Amman and Abu Dhabi. Over her long and distinguished career, Ms Batayneh has led multidisciplinary teams on large-scale international and regional projects in the USA, Pakistan, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE. In addition to her passion for applying creativity, design and innovation to enhance the built environment, she is actively engaged in social initiatives through national and international commissions and boards. Ms Batayneh served on the Master Jury for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2019 and was a member of the 2022 Award Steering Committee. In 2013, The Royal Architectural Institute Of Canada | L'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada (RAIC) awarded its prestigious RAIC Gold Medal to His Highness the Aga Khan, making him the first non-architect to receive this distinction in more than 30 years. His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and Patron of the Aga Khan Museum, passed away peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family. Prince Karim Aga Khan was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network. The Aga Khan was deeply engaged in the arts and cultural matters and established programs and initiatives to support architecture, music, and conservation. In 1977 he created the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which recognises excellence in architecture. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture offer its condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide. As we honour the legacy of our founder, Prince Karim Aga Khan, we continue to work with our partners to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world. Meet the 2023-2025 Master Jury! Noura Alsayeh is an architect and curator with over 15 years of experience in the cultural development, architectural and planning fields. She holds a MArch from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL. She currently advises the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities on cultural and heritage policies, where she oversees the planning and implementation of cultural institutions and museums as well as urban rehabilitation strategies. She is also a board member of the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit. She has built a number of temporary and permanent architectural installations and interventions, and has worked as an architect in Jerusalem, Amsterdam and New York. She was the co-curator of “Reclaim”, Bahrain's first participation at the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010, which was awarded a Golden Lion. She was also the deputy commissioner general of the Bahrain Pavilion at the Expo Milan 2015, which received a silver medal for Best Architecture and Landscape. Since 2015, Al-Sayeh Holtrop has headed the “Pearling, Testimony of an Island Economy” UNESCO World Heritage project, which received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture as part of the Muharraq Revitalisation project in 2019. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture hosted the first meeting of the Master Jury. This gathering marks the start of the rigorous selection process for the 16th Award cycle (2023-2025). During this initial phase, the Jury evaluated hundreds of submissions from around the globe to establish a shortlist of exemplary projects. These shortlisted projects will now undergo meticulous on-site reviews conducted by independent experts, including architects, conservation specialists, planners, and structural engineers. The shortlist will remain confidential until the spring. The Master Jury will reconvene in the summer to review the findings from the on-site evaluations and select the final recipients of the Award, celebrating architectural excellence that inspires and transforms communities worldwide.
