Learning from Nature’s #Genius: #Bioinfused Innovation in Action🌱 A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for Bioinfused Innovation: Learn from Nature’s Genius, hosted by Alpine Genius Think Tank on January 28, 2025. And thanks to Anna Teresa Kopacz for co-hosting with me! Together, we tackled a crucial #challenge: How can we design #resilient #buildings in the face of #climate #change? We must address extreme #heat, #cold, #floods, and high #winds, so we turned to #nature for #inspiration. Our #alpine #mentor for the evening? The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) 🦅. Its nest, built in high-altitude, exposed locations, is #flexible, #adaptive, and resilient. It can withstand seismic activity and shifting winds. And its size-to-body ratio? This is a thought-provoking contrast when we compare it to human-built structures. 💡 Key takeaways from nature’s wisdom: - Adapt #size to needs and use—bigger isn’t always better! - Let air through instead of blocking it—#flow is key to resilience. - Deflect wind instead of fighting it—nature rarely resists head-on. - Regulate #temperature with airflow—#passive solutions are powerful. - Work with, not against, the local #environment. Topography, climate, and materials matter. - Think beyond single buildings—design for #communities. From pit houses in the Pacific Northwest to seasonally #adaptive structures, nature offers a #toolkit for #innovation. Could wind-exposed buildings help ventilate a windmill?
