📢 New Video: Tackling Plastic Waste in Zimbabwe 🌍♻️ With support from Handelens Miljøfond (NREF), the Secretariat of the BRS Conventions implemented pilot projects in Zimbabwe to improve the management of plastics waste. This video highlights initiatives in Harare, Lake Kariba, and Victoria Falls, including the collection of discarded plastic fishing nets in Lake Kariba in cooperation with the Gache Gache fishing community. The project also worked with the tourism sector to promote sustainable practices and reduce single-use plastics in hotels. These efforts were carried out in collaboration with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA)-Zimbabwe) and local partners. 📣 The Global Environment Facility approves landmark USD 206.8 million programme to eliminate PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) by 2028 The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council has approved a groundbreaking global programme dedicated to the elimination of a class of harmful chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) primarily found in electrical transformers around the world. This ambitious initiative combines USD 43.8 million in GEF grant funding with USD 163 million in partner co-financing and represents a major milestone towards meeting the #StockholmConvention’s 2025 and 2028 #PCB elimination goals and facilitating the energy transition to reduce the effects of climate change. The Global Elimination Programme for PCBs (GEP-PCB, GEF ID 11749), showcases the power of partnership and innovation in tackling complex environmental issues by bringing together a powerful coalition of partners that include the The World Bank , the Secretariats of the Global Environment Facility and the The Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS), and key GEF agencies, including the African Development Bank, the UNDP, and the UN Environment Programme. This gigantic joint effort brings together expertise, resources, and innovative solutions, such as blended finance, to tackle PCB management and environmentally sound disposal, aimed at protecting global health. This initiative will support developing countries in updating and verifying their PCB inventories, scale up safe disposal practices, and replace outdated transformers as they engage in the renewable energy transition. The programme will initially target Cameroon, Eswatini, Gabon, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Uganda, with plans to expand to more developing countries in the coming months. It aims to deliver substantial global environmental benefits, including the elimination of approximately 8,750 tons of PCBs and a reduction of 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent in greenhouse gas emissions. By incorporating #PCBelimination into the broader energy projects led by the The World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks— the programme will not only address harmful contamination but also will improve operational and energy efficiency of electricity grids in participating nations and pave the way for reducing dangerous carbon emissions. This international collaboration was made possible through crucial support from the #EuropeanUnion, France, and Germany during the programme’s development phase. Their contributions underscore the collective commitment of Parties to the #StockholmConvention to fulfill their obligations while leveraging the GEF’s position as a global financial leader in environmental protection. Today, on International Mountain Day, we celebrate the vital role mountains play in our lives and renew our commitment to protecting these precious ecosystems. #MountainsMatter 🌍🏔️ Over the past year, the #BRSSecretariat has made remarkable progress in tackling plastics waste in mountain areas in the context of the ‘plastic waste in the remote and mountainous areas project’: ✅ Pilot activities launched in Seychelles, Lesotho, and Rwanda to address unique local challenges, while pilots in Peru and Kazakhstan are coming to a close. ✅ Developed four national inventories for plastics waste in Kazakhstan, Peru, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. ✅ Hosted the first-ever Global Workshop on Plastic Waste in Mountains from 7-9 November in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, bringing together over 20 mountainous countries to share challenges, best practices, and innovative solutions. ✅ Signed an MoU with global snowsports associations – Interski International, IAESS, and ISIA – to collaborate on education, awareness, and campaigns targeting plastic waste prevention and reduction through youth engagement and snowsport instructors and athletes. As we look ahead to another year of action and collaboration, we are committed to building on this momentum working hand-in-hand with stakeholders to end plastics waste in the mountains. Together, we can protect these vital ecosystems for generations to come. #MountainsMatter @UNMountains #BRSConventions #ChemicalsandWastes #MakeVisibletheInvisible
