Breaking New Ground in Mental Health Treatment Researchers at the Department of Biomedicine may have discovered a promising new application for fampridine, a drug currently prescribed to improve mobility in multiple sclerosis (MS). A recent study, published in Molecular Psychiatry, suggests fampridine could improve working memory for individuals struggling with conditions like schizophrenia, depression, or ADHD. In the study, fampridine showed a marked improvement in working memory—enabling individuals to stay engaged in conversations and manage short-term tasks more effectively. This effect was most pronounced in those with initially low working memory capacity. Andreas Papassotiropoulos and Dominique de Quervain are pioneering follow-up studies to further explore fampridine’s potential benefits in mental health. This repurposing could mean faster access to treatment options for patients who need them the most. New Hope for Glioblastoma Patients Researchers at the Department of Biomedicine (Universität Basel), led by Gregor Hutter, along with colleagues at the Universitätsspital Basel (USB), have developed an innovative immunotherapy to target glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor. This new approach not only uses CAR T-cells to attack cancer cells directly, but also transforms the tumor’s microenvironment, turning traitorous immune cells back into defenders. The results? Complete tumor eradication in early animal studies. Clinical trials are next, with the hope of offering a new treatment option for this relentless cancer.
