Our RDS Co-Chair Prof. Dr. Heiko Schuldt was interviewed by bajour.ch this week to explain how AI is not a reliable source when it comes to getting information about politicians in advance of the Basel elections this weekend. Hallucinations, old and unverified sources, and a lack of critical thinking on the part of the user, all contribute to a proliferation of false or misleading information. We congratulate Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield on their well-deserved #NobelPrize2024 in Physics for their groundbreaking work that has laid the foundation for today's modern AI. We are delighted that their work, which has had and will continue to have a significant impact on all areas of our lives, has been recognised in this way.
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 is awarded to John J. Hopfield och Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks” This year’s two Nobel Laureates in Physics have used tools from physics to develop methods that are the foundation of today’s powerful machine learning. John Hopfield created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data. Geoffrey Hinton invented a method that can autonomously find properties in data, and so perform tasks such as identifying specific elements in pictures.
