Should we have children in a Climate Crisis, considering the additional CO2 they would emit? Quiet frankly, who cares! It is a distraction from the real drivers of Climate Collapse. For the December edition of Schweizer Monat I wrote an article on this subject, since the question comes up with annoying frequency. To get to the point, I view the discussion as a distraction. Distraction not as a consequence but as a tactic. So that we continue to point fingers at each other and ignore the criminal negligence of governments and murderous greed of the 1%. It is our job as a society to create the conditions for future generations not just to survive but to thrive. Something that our current trajectory of fossil fuel usage and profit first economic model makes impossible. This does not mean that we need to continue to tell women what to do with their lives and bodies and if it is right or wrong to have more children in a climate crisis. As I outline in the article the 58 Tonnes of CO2 per year that a child emits pales in comparison to some other emissions such as private jets, luxury emissions for the 0.1%, or the hundreds of millions of tonnes emitted by the investments of the Swiss Financial Sector, to enrich a shareholder class. These, not children, are the emissions factors that we need to tackle. This is where our discussion should be. A discussion on how to rapidly reduce current emissions, which will not be possible without a complete transformation of our society. One that can only justly be pursued if we deepen political and economic enfranchisement to all people to ensure they can drive the transformation. The time to act is now! We should only point a finger at each other, to challenge apathy and encourage radical action. Together we can organise, we can create new realities and we can challenge the power of the 1% to create future societies where children can thrive. Join us in this mission!
