Frontiers in Earth Science is hosting a webinar that dives into the geological history of Southeast Asia. 'Early Cretaceous volcanic-arc magmatism in the Dalat-Kratie Fold Belt of eastern Cambodia: implications for the lithotectonic evolution of the Indochina terrane' webinar, is led by Dr Greg Shellnutt. The Mesozoic granitic plutons, ranging from 240 to 80 Ma, reveal multiple tectonomagmatic phases tied to the subduction of the Paleotethys & Paleo-Pacific ocean. 🌐 Academic publishing is transforming—and collaboration is the driving force. At the 2024 Charleston Conference, leaders across libraries, publishing, and research came together to explore pivotal trends in open access. 💡 Highlights: ✅ Library Partnership Ratings (LPRs): A game-changer for transparent publisher evaluation. ✅ Scaling Community-Driven OA: Addressing the unique challenges of Diamond OA. ✅ AI in Publishing: From ethical integration to supporting research integrity. We’re proud to have shared our insights, including new institutional OA models and AI synergies in publishing. As one speaker said, "Collaboration isn’t just a path forward; it’s the only path forward." Tackling emissions reductions effectively requires adopting a whole #EarthSystem approach. This means not just focusing on climate, but nature and other underpinning natural processes too. "If we’re going to avoid failure on climate, then safeguarding the global commons must be a focus", says Jane Madgwick, executive director of Global Commons Alliance. From the Arctic sea ice to the Amazon rainforest, from critical ocean currents to our freshwater network, the global commons support the well-being of all life on Earth. In the second commentary in our Future of COP series, Salvatore Arico, the CEO of International Science Council, addresses the need to reform the #COP so that actionable scientific knowledge is taken into account. He argues this can only happen through the combined efforts of co-designing the #ClimateAction research agenda, co-producing knowledge and co-delivering solutions, all supported by dialogues and collaborations involving multiple stakeholders across these areas. The first commentary in our Future of COP series is from Sandrine Dixson-Declève, co-president of The Club of Rome, co-author of Earth for All, and executive chair of the Earth4All initiative. 👉 To ensure a safe #ClimateFuture for humanity, we need better global governance and courageous leadership. 👉 She calls for the United Nations to shift gears to focus all efforts on meeting global goals and commitments by 2050, and a rapid and radical transformation of the #COP process. 👉 The gap between scientific and justice-based demands and what petro-states accept highlights COP's fundamental inability to deliver timely, scalable #ClimateAction. We need to bridge the gap between #science and #action. Read more from her insightful commentary in Frontiers Policy Labs on the urgent need to reform COP to deliver real climate action through content and format changes ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dZ-UPxyq #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan #FrontiersForClimate #PlanetaryHealth #PlanetaryBoundaryScience

The impacts of #ClimateChange are becoming increasingly clear: more severe storms ⚡, changes to rainfall 🌧️, prolonged and more extreme heatwaves 🔥, and rising sea levels 🌊. A group of researchers call for deeper assessments of regional #ClimateRisks and vulnerability, to better inform #ClimatePolicy and adaptation measures by governments, citizens, and businesses. Open science is essential for delivering solutions that support healthy lives on a healthy planet. By making scientific research accessible, we can foster global collaboration and innovation, which are vital for tackling society’s most pressing challenges. At Frontiers, we are dedicated to working with scientific communities worldwide to promote open science and ensure that knowledge is widely shared. Through initiatives like Frontiers for Young Minds, we actively involve young people in the open science process to help them understand not only the science of an article, but also the larger scientific and review process. This early engagement empowers the next generation, showing them that science is for everyone and inspiring them to contribute to a more sustainable future. Laura Henderson, head of program for Frontiers for Young Minds, will continue the conversation at the 2024 Ukrainian Open Science Forum during the “Open Minds, Early Start: Cultivating the future of Open Science” session taking place virtually 22 November at 15:45 EET. We’re driving meaningful change together—don’t miss this article from Frontiers on the imperatives for reducing methane emissions #COP29
Methane is the second most important #greenhousegas driving #climatechange. This article, led by Prof Drew Shindell of Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment, published in Frontiers in Science, puts a spotlight on methane as the fastest way to slow #globalwarming right now. The levels are rising fast: between 2010 and 2019 a total warming of 1.07C was observed, of which half a degree was attributed to methane alone. Despite this, little action has been taken to reduce methane emissions, with most efforts continue to be focusing on CO2 mitigation. The article outlines three methane imperatives for reducing emissions: 1️⃣ Changing course and reversing methane emission growth 1️⃣ Aligning methane and carbon dioxide mitigation 3️⃣ Optimizing methane abatement options and policies. One of the contributors to the article hub, Marcelo Mena of Global Methane Hub, joined a panel hosted by Frontiers and the Frontiers Research Foundation together with UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub last week at #COP29, addressing the need to bridge the gap between #science and #policy.
