Since 2000, 44 countries and 1 territory have been certified malaria-free, and 25 countries now report fewer than 10 cases annually. These achievements inspire hope—but the fight isn’t over. The World Health Organization #WMR2024 finds... 📊 In 2023, 263M malaria cases were reported, with 95% of deaths occurring in the African region. 💉 Vaccines, advanced nets, and stronger health systems offer the tools we need. 💵 But with only $4B in funding in 2023, we’re falling short of the $8.3B target needed to achieve global goals. It’s time for bold investments, equity-focused action, and innovation to close the gap and achieve a malaria-free future for all #OurOnlyChoice #EndMalaria Discover the #WorldMalariaReport here: https://lnkd.in/d6bvYBw6

The Malaria Atlas Project and Boston Consulting Group (BCG)'s latest report, based on the most rigorous quantitative impact analysis to date, reveals that #climatechange could result in 550,000+ additional malaria deaths from 2030 to 2049, with 1.3 billion people in Africa potentially being exposed to even tougher battles against the disease. There is an urgent need for equitable access to new tools, increased investment and climate-resilient health systems to mitigate these impacts. 📄Learn more from the report: https://bit.ly/3ZvuXQr Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Philip Welkhoff, Helen Jamet, Michael Adekunle Charles, Lizz Ntonjira, Kelsey Mertes

𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲.... The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and RBM Partnership to End Malaria are joining forces to strengthen global efforts to #EndMalaria by 2030! 👏 🚨The fight against malaria is at a crucial juncture. Reducing malaria cases by 90% by 2030 could boost GDP by over $142 billion in endemic countries. With global progress stalling in recent years, as seen in today's #WMR2024, it is vital to step up the fight to end this epidemic by 2030. This new partnership with the UK goes beyond fighting a disease. More than this, it will focus on: ✅ Mobilizing global leaders in the fight against malaria. ✅ Addressing malaria drug and insecticide resistance. ✅ Strengthening malaria control in #Cameroon, #Nigeria, #Tanzania, and #Uganda. ✅ Protecting women and girls. ✅ Enhancing economic growth in the Global South. The new partnership with #RBM builds upon the UK’s longstanding commitment to eliminate malaria. Some of the UK’s key initiatives include: 👉 Vaccination: The UK is supporting @Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance to vaccinate 300 million children by 2025, including the rollout of new malaria vaccines in 23 countries. 👉 Malaria Treatments: The UK is collaborating with The Global Fund to distribute 86 million mosquito nets, provide 452,000 courses of malaria prevention treatments, and deliver treatment and care for 18 million people affected by malaria. 👉 Research: The UK contributes to critical research to develop new tools and treatments to prevent and treat malaria. Together, we can create a future free of malaria! "Beyond the numbers and statistics, are people. I’ve witnessed the toll malaria takes - not just on patients but on families...their resilience does not falter, but their struggles underline how much more we must do." #RBMPartnership CEO Dr Michael Adekunle Charles share his reflections on the World Malaria Report 2024 🌍⬇️ You can download the full #WMR2024 here: https://lnkd.in/d6bvYBw6
As I reflect on the 2024 World Malaria Report, released by World Health Organization today, it's a moment to both celebrate progress and confront the challenges that remain. First, let’s celebrate progress: Cape Verde and Egypt are now malaria-free—an incredible achievement made possible by the dedication of their people and governments. Rwanda and India have made impressive strides in reducing malaria cases, and 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟮𝟱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟭𝟬 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 - up from just 4 countries in 2000. But the global picture remains sobering. 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝟭𝟭 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮. Challenges like insecticide resistance, conflict, climate change, and funding gaps are stalling the progress to #endmalaria. Beyond the numbers and statistics, are people. I’ve witnessed the toll malaria takes - not just on patients but on families. Mothers in hospital wards, unable to work or contribute to their households, sitting by their children battling severe malaria. Their resilience does not falter, but their struggles underline how much more we must do. Here’s how we can bend the curve: ✔️𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀: local, regional, global. RBM Partnership to End Malaria is uniquely positioned to lead this charge. ✔️𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Health workers are the backbone of the fight, especially women. Malaria elimination starts and ends with them, and their ownership is critical. ✔️𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: 2025 is pivotal with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and The Global Fund replenishments. I’ve seen what resources mean on the ground—a stocked clinic versus an empty one is often the difference between life and death. We have the tools we need— vaccines, next-gen bed nets, and proven interventions—but equitable access requires robust and sustainable funding. This year’s #WMR2024 report also highlights 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿, and for good reason. Women bear the brunt of malaria’s burden, whether as patients during pregnancy, as caregivers for sick children, or as community health champions. They are at the heart of our fight, and they must remain at the centre of our solutions. Zero malaria begins with each of us—me, you, and everyone together. As you reflect on the #WMR2024, consider how we can all contribute collectively to reduce malaria. 📢The World Health Organization's World Malaria Report 2024 is out now! 🔗https://lnkd.in/d6bvYBw6 and 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗯 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁. Since 2000, global initiatives have averted 2.2 billion malaria cases and saved 12.7 million lives, a testament to the power of coordinated efforts. Yet, malaria continues to claim hundreds of thousands of lives each year, underscoring the urgency for renewed action. 📊Key insights from the 2024 WHO World Malaria Report: In 2023, there were 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths - a slight increase in cases compared to 2022. 95% of malaria deaths occur in the African region, disproportionately affecting young children and pregnant women. Since 2015, the African region has reduced malaria mortality by 16%, but progress is too slow to meet the 2030 targets. The path forward: 🌟Expand lifesaving tools like vaccines and next-gen nets. 💵Address critical funding gaps (2023: $4B vs. $8.3B target). 🛠️Build equitable, resilient health systems to protect the most vulnerable. At RBM Partnership to End Malaria, we’re committed to bridging these gaps, ensuring everyone—no matter where they live—has access to the care they need #EndMalaria #WMR2024 #ZeroMalariaStartsWithMe

At the recent 32nd RBM Partnership Board Meeting, we had the privilege of hearing directly from courageous community health workers in hard to reach areas in #Colombia, who are the backbone of malaria diagnosis and treatment in their communities. Moderated by Milton Cardozo Cruz #PAHO and Lizz Ntonjira, #RBMPartnership Global Communications & External Engagement Advisor, the session, titled “𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘈𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢”, was co-hosted by Pan American Health Organization and featured a panel of dedicated microscopists, volunteer collaborators, and community leaders from malaria-affected municipalities including Guapi, Montecristo, Tumaco, El Bagre and the district of Pueblo Rico in Colombia. Each shared their journeys, highlighting the challenges faced by rural and indigenous communities and their relentless efforts to combat malaria. 🔑Key Takeaways: 🌱The panelists spoke of diverse settings, from gold mining areas to remote rural villages, where access to healthcare remains a challenge. Despite these hurdles, their dedication ensures life-saving malaria services reach those in need. ⛏️Mining activities often heighten exposure to malaria, and the panellists underscored the need for improved healthcare access for miners. 🏥Volunteer collaborators shared their experiences transforming malaria care in their regions, detecting cases, distributing tests, and ensuring treatment reaches vulnerable populations. ⚕️There was an urgent call to strengthen continued collaboration with municipalities to facilitate the safety of the community health workers as they do their work. The session reminded us of the critical role of local heroes in the fight against #malaria and the importance of equipping #communities to take charge of their health. The work of these community health workers is essential in transforming malaria prevention and treatment, particularly in remote and indigenous regions. #EndMalaria #ZeroMalariaStartsWithMe #GlobalHealth Inter-American Development Bank | Michael Adekunle Charles | Joy Phumaphi, African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) | Marijke Wijnroks, The Global Fund | Sarthak Das, DrPH, Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA) | Irene Isaka, East African Community Secretariat | Prof. Julio Rakotonirina, African Union | jigmi singay | Yacine Diop Djibo, Speak Up Africa | Sherwin Charles, Goodbye Malaria | Caroline Desrousseaux, Vestergaard | Ayo Ipinmoye, Civil Society in Malaria Control Immunization and Nutrition | wato joseph | Helen Jamet, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation | David Walton, MD MPH, USAID PMI Impact Malaria | Daniel Ngamije Madandi, World Health Organization | Andrew Kirkwood, UNOPS | Isabella Oyier, Wellcome Trust | Yvonne Chaka Chaka | olivia ngou | Maelle Ba | Barbara Laurenceau
