If a fiber amplifier is used for amplifying ultrashort pulses which develop a substantial peak power in the fiber, it may happen that stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) has strong effects. In some case, these limit the achievable amplifier performance. In this case study, we explore this in different pulse duration regimes, considering a core-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier with moderate performance characteristics, with pulse energies of a few hundred nanojoules. https://lnkd.in/dzp9GtwR #Photonics #Learning #Pulses

Within a quantitative model for the fiber amplifier or fiber laser, we somehow need to describe the light propagating in the fiber. How that should be done in detail, depends very much on the circumstances. In most cases, we are dealing with different light waves at substantially different wavelengths – for example, the pump wave and a signal wave. What Does Modeling Mean? Generally, a model is a mental construction which is supposed to resemble some part of reality – for example, the power conversion from pump light to signal light in a fiber amplifier or the propagation of ultrashort pulses in an optical fiber. Keep in mind that modeling always starts with thinking; only at a later point, equations and computing things with software come into play.
