The Executive Board of the #SwissYoungAcademy supports the statements made in the open #letter from the Akademien der Wissenschaften Schweiz to the Management Board of SRF - Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen 🇨🇭 📺 🎙️ regarding the programme changes announced on 6 February: 💬 "As a platform dedicated to fostering #dialogue between #science and #society, we view the planned cancellation of the science magazine on SRF2 Kultur and SRF News, as well as the #downsizing of the science editorial team at Radio SRF, with deep concern. #Science #journalism is more critical than ever. In an era of rapid technological advancements, climate #challenges, and medical breakthroughs, independent and critical reporting ensures that #scientific #knowledge and experts reach the public in a reliable, effective, and accessible way. Only skilled science journalists can translate complex findings into meaningful #narratives while maintaining both rigor and critical distance. For #young #researchers, strong science journalism is essential. It amplifies the #impact of our work, making research visible beyond #academia and ensuring that diverse scientific voices are heard. Furthermore, independent #reporting fosters trust in scientific research, prevents the #politicization of science and strengthens its role in public discourse. #Public #service #media have a #responsibility to uphold science journalism, particularly as private outlets reduce their #coverage. Weakening SRF’s role creates space for #misinformation and undermines fact-based decision-making—especially concerning Switzerland’s direct #democracy. SRF’s strength in making #complex scientific topics accessible must be preserved.” 💬
