🧀 Swiss4Afrika is proud to announce that the Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa is sponsoring one of our sustainability projects. Specifically, our Multimedia and Early Childhood Educational Centre has been selected for funding. 🫕🫕🫕 We will provide a multimedia room to a minority group of homeless individuals in South Africa who do not receive funding from the South African government or any international non-profit organizations. The project aims to place preschool children in kindergarten to provide them with early childhood education opportunities. Additionally, it will provide them with one nutritious meal per day to stimulate brain development. The project will provide a safe, dry, and clean environment for school children to do homework, access computers and the internet, and receive vital digital skills training. This will help align their developmental progress with that of their peers who have a more stable home environment. Additionally, the facility will include a multimedia room for adults to use computers and the internet for job searching, CV creation, and communication with potential employers. Furthermore, the multimedia centre will provide online courses to enhance skills. Swiss4Afrika will also enrol two mothers from Soli in a distance learning programme to become preschool teachers. This will make them employable and provide much-needed teachers for our early education programmes. The two women will use the multimedia room for distance learning and teaching preschool children at Soli. We welcome Embassy staff to actively participate in building the room, installing computers, or designing learning materials. A Prize Giving Like No Other: Restoring Dignity and Hope at Swiss4Afrika Have you ever heard of a prize giving inside a homeless centre? Well, that’s exactly what Swiss4Afrika did this year, and it was nothing short of life-changing for the people involved. At Swiss4Afrika, we believe that even the most vulnerable members of society deserve recognition for their efforts. People who have tragically lost everything they worked for, or children growing up in homeless centres, need to feel valued. They need to know that their hard work, resilience, and perseverance don't go unnoticed. That's why we decided to hold social upliftment “competitions” to encourage, inspire, and support them on their journey toward rebuilding their lives. We launched several initiatives this year, starting with the Best Vegetable Garden competition. Our aim was to inspire residents to grow their own vegetables, which they could donate to the centre’s kitchen. We also held the Best Flower Garden competition, a small but powerful way to improve mental health and provide a bit of beauty in their lives. Additionally, we celebrated the Best Decorated Garden and “Home” competition, encouraging the residents to add a personal touch to their spaces and bring a sense of ownership back into their lives. For the children in the centre, we hosted a prize-giving ceremony for their academic achievements at school. It was an opportunity to encourage them to work harder and dream bigger, showing them that education is their pathway out of adversity. One of our most exciting initiatives was the Scarecrow Competition, part of our self-sustainable garden project. This year, the children participated in an educational drawing competition, showcasing their creativity and passion for learning about vegetables and gardening. The winners will have the chance to bring their drawings to life by building the scarecrow over the December school holidays, teaching them the importance of sustainable living. So, why a prize-giving inside a homeless centre, you may ask? Because we want to remind these people that they are not forgotten. We want to show them that they have value in life, and they can still contribute meaningfully to society. This event was about restoring dignity, boosting mental health, and offering hope for a brighter future. 🌱 Growing Together: Creativity Meets Sustainability 🌍 This past weekend, something truly magical happened as part of our Swiss4Afrika sustainable vegetable garden project. We invited children from the community to join us in a scarecrow competition, and the results were nothing short of heartwarming! The goal was simple: bring creativity, laughter, and hands-on learning to the project while highlighting the importance of sustainable farming. But what we witnessed was extraordinary. Kids of all ages came together to design the most imaginative scarecrows, each one telling its own story. From straw-stuffed superheroes to eco-friendly guardians of the garden, the scarecrows reflected not just creativity but also the children’s growing awareness of sustainability. A special congratulations goes out to Kelly, one of the amazing kids from our homeless shelter, whose scarecrow stole the show and won first place! Kelly’s design was not only creative but also showcased a beautiful message of hope and resilience. We couldn’t be prouder of her achievement and the joy it brought to everyone involved. What food makes you happy? 🍔 Last night, the kids living in our homeless center in South Africa were absolutely overjoyed because they got to make their own hamburgers! What they didn’t know was that one of our two chefs wasn’t feeling well, and it wasn’t possible to pre-prepare the burgers. Out of necessity and quick thinking, the staff introduced “Hamburger Fun Day.” The kids were shown how to create their own hamburgers, and out of what could have been a challenge came a tale of big smiles and pure happiness. 😊 This simple moment reminded us how easy it is to brighten a child’s day. Even without a roof of their own or their own beds, these little acts of creativity and care can bring immense joy. Today, we had the privilege of sponsoring a sports tournament focused on raising awareness about gender-based violence (GBV). We were also honoured to be joined by Kaizer Chiefs legend and coach, Dillion Sheppard, who inspired the participants with his presence and support. Building Hope and Dignity in South Africa This week, we are witnessing incredible kindness and generosity at one of our homeless centers in South Africa. A previous sponsor has stepped forward to build three new homes, bringing hope and stability to those in need: 🏠 One home for a homeless single mother and her two teenage daughters. 🏠 Two one-bedroom units for homeless seniors. At Swiss4Afrika, we are committed to replacing old, unsafe, and dilapidated sheds with eco-friendly, renewable homes that restore dignity and improve lives. Yesterday, the Embassy of Switzerland in collaboration with the ICRC were delighted to host an event in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, with the opening of an exhibition, titled: “Dialogues on Humanity” available at the Javett Art Centre until 13 January 2025. The commemoration of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions 75 years ago is an opportunity to highlight their importance for humanity at a time where conflicts continue to cause so much suffering and so many victims. The year 2024 also marks the 160th anniversary of the first Geneva Convention. Universally ratified, the Geneva Conventions are the fruit of the political will of all states. They are a legal instrument that creates obligations for all parties to a conflict. The Geneva Conventions set limits to war in order to protect its victims. This commemoration is a reminder of the importance of rallying our actions and obligations at the service of our common humanity. 🌟 Help Us Break the Cycle of Poverty Through Education 🌟 At Swiss4Afrika, we are committed to changing lives by providing opportunities for children living in homeless shelters in South Africa. For many of these children, education is the only long-term solution to breaking the cycle of poverty—but the odds are stacked against them. 💔 Life in a Homeless Shelter: Families often live in cramped 3m x 3m wooden shacks with no insulation, electricity, or ablution facilities. Homework is done by candlelight, flashlight, or—if they’re lucky—the light of a cell phone. Many children missed out on Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs, creating significant learning disadvantages. Earlier this year, with the support of the Swiss Embassy in South Africa, we built a Multimedia and ECD Room where: Children now have a safe space to do homework. They have access to computers and the internet. Dedicated facilitators (women who were previously homeless and trained in our program) assist them with schoolwork. 📚 What’s Next? Our vision for 2025 is clear, but we need your help. We have a 15,000 CHF education budget to cover school fees, resources, and ongoing support.
