Today, I had the honour of launching the collaboration between UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Latin America and the Caribbean on sustainable and inclusive coffee value chains. Sustainable coffee provides income for millions of people in rural communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, while being compatible with #biodiversity and #environmental preservation. In countries like Lao PDR, where agriculture represents 16.1% of GDP and employs over two-thirds of its workforce, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will begin a technical cooperation project on coffee next year. Important challenges persist in coffee production: - Smallholder farmers, the backbone of the coffee industry, face low and volatile incomes and insufficient input access. - #Women farmers often encounter additional barriers that limit their potential. - Increasing market demands for #traceability and #deforestation-free coffee require adaptation and innovation. To address these challenges, our organizations are partnering to promote: ✅ Economic sustainability by empowering producers with access to resources and opportunities. ✅ Environmental sustainability by supporting biodiversity and alignment with the 2030 Agenda. ✅ Social inclusiveness by ensuring gender equality and fair access across the value chain. Through donor-funded capacity-building, policy dialogue,s, and strategic partnerships, we are committed to making coffee value chains more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive. This is just the beginning. Let’s keep the momentum going! #Sustainability #Coffee UNCTAD Trade

#Climate change is intensifying the pressures on Irish biodiversity, from habitat loss and pollution to invasive species. Degraded habitats are less resilient to these challenges, reducing their ability to provide the critical ecosystem services we depend on. Species are already showing changes, such as earlier migration and breeding patterns, but the combined stresses of climate change and other threats make adaptation a significant challenge. The DLR County Biodiversity Action Plan (2021-2025) is a step forward, integrating strategies to address these climate impacts while safeguarding biodiversity. Today UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) joins the celebration of the 2nd anniversary of the UN Biodiversity Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF). Let us use this opportunity to take note of some interesting facts demonstrating how #trade can promote implementation of the #KMGBF goals and targets and achieve the vision of living in harmony with Nature. #DYK that 👉🏼 11 out of the 23 #KMGBF targets have indicators with linkages to trade 🔎 Sustainable trade can be part of the solution to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and support the #KMGBF 📈 Biodiversity-based products trade accounting for 17% of global trade – valued at $3.7 trillion - and contributing approximately 7% the world’s GDP ✔ The TraBio statistical tool and the BioTrade Principles and Criteria could help member States and define their national targets when developing National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans in the framework of UN Biodiversity #KMGBF 👉🏼 #BioTrade Principles and Criteria are directly relevant to 9 out of the 23 #KMGBF Targets and to Goal B 👩🏾🤝🧑🏼 #BioTrade can create income for people and communities - particularly in biodiversity-rich areas, motivating them to conserve and wisely use biodiversity, guaranteeing their source of livelihood 👁 For further details on TraBio visit the relevant UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) webpage: https://shorturl.at/Y33Nk 📖Learn more about the BioTrade Principles and Criteria: https://shorturl.at/J3TJY 🎇Recently at #COP16Colombia UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) organized the first ever #TradeDay to showcase how #Trade can support #KMGBF implementation. 🐡‼️ I am thrilled to share UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s latest technical note, offering the first ever mapping of ocean-related measures in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). 🌊 Oceans are critical to SIDS - not only as key economic drivers through fisheries, tourism and trade, but also as vital buffers against the devastating impacts of climate change. These countries face disproportionate risks from rising sea levels, extreme weather and ocean degradation, which threaten their livelihoods, ecosystems and even their survival. 🐠 This publication is unique in directly responding to UNCTAD’s action on climate and the SIDS Strategy under the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda (ABBAs). It follows on from UNFCCC COP29 and serves as a key resource as we prepare for the 5th Ocean Forum next year. 🌍 The analysis of 606 ocean measures submitted by SIDS shows a strong focus on adaptation and resilience. However, it also highlights the urgent need for global support - financial, technical and trade-related - to help these nations achieve their ambitious climate goals while protecting their oceans and economies.
