#W4EAI - UNESCO Women 4 Ethical AI Conference in Paris today | Our CEO Caitlin Kraft Buchman delivered a concise set of examples and implications for the future of health research with #AI ⤵ 📣 We must take #Women's Health data seriously, and we must be reminded of the #historicalbias that has consistently sidelined women. ⏺ The majority of biomedical research relies on male mice. We are not actually understanding anything at all about how the women's estrous cycle works, even with COVID #vaccinetrials, only 8.8% of the studies had sex disaggregated data. ⏺ In HIV research, women were left out of sampling bias, and most of #genomicsresearch has all been conducted on European men. ⏺ #BenchmarkingBias: Skin cancer screening tools still lack sufficient diverse data. An algorithm developed in France achieved an accuracy of up to 95%, but it was not effective for individuals with varying skin pigmentation. ⏺ #Modelling: Creating a model based on your perspective also means excluding certain people. A notable example is the emergency room #algorithm deployed worldwide, which quantified access to #care based on the number of visits to a doctor throughout the year. The more often someone visited a doctor, the more likely they were to move to the front of the line in case of an emergency. However, this system benefited only those who could afford financially regular doctor visits, leaving out anyone unable to access medical care during a genuine emergency. 🔹 This presents a tremendous opportunity for 21st-century #science. It’s important to remember that every cell in a woman’s body—not just in her reproductive system—is unique, and some of these cells have never been studied. It’s concerning to think that we are applying our current medical practices on a large scale without fully understanding these differences. 🔹 These are just a few examples, but if we amplify this at the speed and scale with which we plan to deploy AI, the implications of what we don't know could be staggering. 🔹 The governments present in the room need to consider how they will implement research aimed at preventing #AIBias, and ensuring equity. gender equality & democracy, establishing new norms now, because a woman's place is at the decision-making table.
Info
Women at the Table is a growing, global CSO based in Geneva – and the first organization to focus on systems change by helping feminists gain influence in sectors that have key structural impact: technology, sustainability, democracy and the economy. Based on an ambitious yet actionable 10-year plan, Women at the Table identifies leverage points in the intricate yet fundamental systems that dictate women’s day-to-day lives. We also spotlight and support women change-makers in order to share multiple, varied visions of women’s leadership and innovation. Women at the Table exposes the systematic exclusion of women in defining the rules – and pinpoints strategic changes to laws, regulations and norms to achieve gender equality and strengthen democracy. By connecting the right people, at the right place at the right time, women are influentially involved in all levels of decision-making, so change can happen now.

📖 I had the honor to interview the very inspiring Caitlin Kraft Buchman on the topic of AI, gender, and algorithms. Our conversation revolved around the meaning of a feminist AI, promising solutions, and the value of community-built tools - just to name a few! 🤖 The current debate in Swizerland doesn't adequately consider the gender and discrimination dimensions yet. With this publication, I hope to have contributed to bringing a feminist and intersectionnal lens to the rising debate surrounding AI and algorithms. AI discrimination, against not only women, is a growing issue that needs our (and our leaders'!) attention. Thank you Caitlin Kraft-Buchman for your collaboration and your amazing work! 👏 Eidgenössische Kommission für Frauenfragen EKF Women At The Table A+ Alliance
📓 Eidgenössische Kommission für Frauenfragen EKF — Incredible cover, relevant reporting, and thought-provoking questions! ♀ 💭 💡 Interviewing Women At The Table's founder: "Caitlin Kraft Buchman advocates a humanistic and #feminist approach in the tech sector. For her, artificial #intelligence must be feminist and, above all, as she puts it, “pro-social”—meaning it should consider often-overlooked minorities and be designed with positive contributions to everyone's lives in mind: “This notion of inclusion and transformation implies that the communities concerned must really be at the heart of the development processes so that we create #technology that we actually need.” 🔗 Read interview in full: https://lnkd.in/d29kqavV Discover the publication: https://lnkd.in/eahFwcAh

Our upcoming #OpenStudio on November 11th will host Daniela Paz Moyano Dávila: Evaluation of SOF+IA in light of Data #Feminism Principles In this open studio, Daniela Moyano will speak about Sof+IA: a prototype chatbot designed to report and provide guidance on Digital Gender Violence (DGV) in #Chile. This evaluation examines its development through Data Feminism principles, highlighting how it challenges power structures, prioritizes survivor needs, and integrates emotion into technology design. Despite challenges such as limited resources and inclusion gaps, Sof+IA centers survivors' experiences and promotes pluralism. Continuous reflection and evaluation are essential for integrating feminist principles into AI development. "At its best, the digital revolution will empower, inform, connect, and save lives. At its worst, it will disempower, misinform, disconnect, and cost lives. #HumanRights will make all the differences to this equation." —Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Caitlin Kraft Buchman joined a critical panel discussion on #AI, women, and the future of supply chain and procurement with Elena Parker and Karin Larsson —asking: Who Codes Equality? Establishing the principles of human rights and #equality is crucial before we address real-world examples of #bias and discrimination in AI. By doing so, we can better #design AI systems that are fair, transparent, and aligned with the values of inclusivity and justice. Thank you to our Mirjana Maillard-Dacic for hosting us, and to the wonderful audience. Photos via Elena Parker

Head of SAP Business Network, Middle and Eastern Europe / Co-Winner of SAP Switzerland Diversity Award 2021
On Wednesday night, I had the pleasure of co-moderating a session at the Women in Supply Chain and Procurement event, where we explored the intersections of AI and gender-responsive approaches. Hosted by Richemont in Meyrin, it was an evening filled with insightful conversations and meaningful connections. A special thank you to Caitlin Kraft Buchman, CEO of Women At The Table, for her powerful presentation, which laid a strong foundation on the importance of human rights and equality in the digital space. Her insights into discrimination and bias within #AI were thought-provoking and deeply impactful. It was also fantastic reconnecting with so many other inspiring professionals (men and women) in the procurement industry. Looking forward to the next gathering where we continue to drive change and innovation together! 🎊 Our collective Comment has been included and cited 5 times in the U.S National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Artificial Intelligence Accountability #PolicyReport Last year, The United States National Telecommunications and Information Administration hosted an open Request for Comment on policies to shape AI #accountability. We created a working group and provided a #humanrights perspective on AI accountability, gathering ethical, technical, legal, and social expertise to be considered by the U.S. government. Our comment addressed questions of #transparency, human rights, and #stakeholder involvement. ⏺ We urged the NTIA to consider #AI accountability through a framework of human rights. ⏺ We addressed transparency and accountability through the perspective of due process. ⏺ We provide information on the “right to know”, urging that AI accountability measures include the requirement that individuals should be notified when an #automated decision has been made about them. ⏺We put forward suggestions for stakeholder involvement, a part of AI accountability that we believe to be unwaveringly necessary. How do we practice #FeministPrinciples in AI Design? Key principles include reflexivity, participation, intersectionality, and working towards structural change. When appropriated by #feminists, AI can serve to challenge social inequality and dismantle structures of power. There are many routes to such appropriation – resisting authoritarian uses through movement-building and creating our own alternative systems that harness the strength of AI towards achieving social change.
