🌐The world needs more early warning coverage, and businesses can help. 📊 Why does this matter? Businesses are increasingly focused on hydrometeorological hazards—and for good reason. The World Economic Forum reports that extreme weather events rank as the second-highest risk in the 2-year outlook and the top risk in the 10-year outlook. The science backs this: extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense, posing significant threats to communities, economies, and supply chains. 💵 The business case is clear: Every US$1 invested in early warning systems generates an estimated US$9 in net economic benefits. Early warning systems save lives and livelihoods, reduce disruptions, protect infrastructure, and build resilience—making them essential for safeguarding people and economies. 📢 Join us live now as WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo discusses the urgent need for #EarlyWarningsForAll at #WEF25. Don’t miss this critical conversation! ⬇️Live stream link in comments⬇️

🌐 #ClimateAction must be grounded in sound science. 📊 Glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate change. This is one of the reasons WMO has made the cryosphere a top priority, contributing to the global conversation on #Glaciers2025. 🏔️ As Ko Barrett highlights, we must strengthen the monitoring and understanding of changes in snow and ice—and their impacts on people, communities, economies, and infrastructure. This requires a focus on improving data exchange, monitoring systems, and transboundary cooperation. 📢 Tune in live for the official launch of the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation: https://lnkd.in/d6Z5HFUf

🟤Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) – the catastrophic release of a water reservoir that has formed at the site of a glacier – pose significant risks for those living below melting glaciers. 🟡GLOFs are characterised by extreme peak discharges, often several times in excess of the maximum discharges of hydrometeorological induced floods. 🟠 Ice-dammed lakes can develop at the margin of an advancing glacier, when side-valleys or depressions at the side of the glacier become truncated and blocked. Over time, as the glaciers retreat, the support of the ice dam is removed and the lake may drain catastrophically. 💡2025 is the International Year of Glacier Preservation – learn more about disaster risks associated with glacial melt in UNDRR's Hazard Information Profiles ➡️ https://ow.ly/fEBM50ThspJ #Glaciers2025

📢 Today, January 21, marks the launch of the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation. This is more than just an event—it’s a rallying call for urgent action on climate adaptation and mitigation. Why does this matter? 🏔️ As Stefan Uhlenbrook highlights, climate change is making the hydrological cycle increasingly erratic. Glaciers, as sensitive indicators of climate change, are experiencing their largest mass loss in 50 years. Thawing permafrost and broader cryospheric changes exacerbate hazards and create new ones, increasing the risk of disasters. 📊 Good decisions rely on good data. WMO works with countries to enhance data exchange, monitoring, and multilateral cooperation. Expanding glacier monitoring is critical to providing the data needed for effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies—and to protect the most vulnerable. 🌐 Join the movement and the conversation at #Glaciers2025. 🇺🇳 We are ready to partner with global leaders at #WEF25 to improve the state of the world in the #IntelligentAge by enhancing environmental security, mitigating risks, and driving economic growth through innovative environmental services. 🌍 Environmental risks dominate the long-term outlook. Extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, critical changes to Earth systems, and natural resource shortages are among the top 10-year risks, according to the World Economic Forum. 🌐 WMO remains committed to driving #ClimateAction through initiatives like #EarlyWarningsForAll for climate adaptation and #GlobalGreenhouseGasWatch for informed climate mitigation, addressing regional, national, and local needs. 🚀 By applying global scientific advances to create locally impactful environmental services, WMO aims to remedy these risks and support the most vulnerable communities. ⬇️ WMO’s eight key recommendations: Link in comments ⬇️
