The #CopernicusClimate Change Service (#C3S) & #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), implemented by #ECMWF.
About us
The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) are two services of the European Union’s Copernicus Earth Observation Programme implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on behalf of the European Commission. 🌍🛰️🔴 The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) provides authoritative information about the world’s past, present and future climate. Our freely accessible high-quality data, tools and information help businesses, scientists and policymakers to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. We directly support businesses in climate-sensitive sectors, such as energy, health and insurance, to develop valuable tools for real-world problems. This stimulates other organisations to create their own applications based on our data. ▶️ climate.copernicus.eu 🌍🛰️🔵 The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides quality-controlled information related to air pollution and health, solar energy, greenhouse gases and climate forcing, across the world. We support policymakers, businesses and citizens by providing atmospheric environmental information, available as analyses and forecasts. We work with a diverse range of industries which use our information products to provide a set of unrivalled services. These include numerous air quality apps, wildfire analysis and solar radiation evaluation among many others. ▶️ atmosphere.copernicus.eu We invite all businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, to get in touch to find out how data can be used to create commercially viable products with the aim of protecting and sustaining our environment.

The 2024 Antarctic #ozonehole has persisted throughout November following its average development up to that point. The stratospheric polar vortex is predicted to breakdown in early December bringing it to a close. See more charts, e.g. our 3D animation, and additional information 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQqGNa8m

Since early November high levels of air pollution have been affecting the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Our #CopernicusAtmosphere data shows how high concentrations of fine particulate matter PM2.5 have been accumulating from north-eastern Pakistan and across northern India to Bangladesh. Air pollution episodes like this are common in the region at this time of year, due to the particular orography, atmospheric circulation and crop residue fires. However, the current situation is exceptional and considered hazardous to health: During many periods between 10 and 20 November, CAMS data showed concentrations of PM2.5 exceeding 300 µg/m³ across large parts of the region. The World Health Organization recommends targets of 15 µg/m³ daily and 5 µg/m³ annual mean concentrations not to be exceeded. Read our latest article for all the details: https://lnkd.in/eXx99q_X

How will climate change in your region? The C3S Atlas allows you to explore and analyse past and future climate monitoring and change information in a flexible way. It facilitates global and regional in-depth assessment of past trends and future changes in key variables and (extreme) indices for different periods across emission scenarios or for different policy-relevant global warming levels (e.g. 1.5°, 2°, 3° and 4°). Today at the COP29 Azerbaijan event on climate scenarios, #C3S director Carlo Buontempo highlighted that the near real-time production of climate data has attracted new attention and audiences who are asking interesting questions, e.g., about the #Honga-Tonga effect, the reasons for the sharp rise in #CH4, and the role of shipping #aerosols. Buontempo explained that the current setup, characterised by a long production cycle of climate data over several years, is not well suited to answer these kinds of questions. He argued that climate science and services need to change to provide more salient and actionable information on climate in support of rapidly changing policy landscape and societal interests. The event was organised by the CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia and the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE). 👉 Read our #COP29 statement: https://lnkd.in/g9_Him2g

Many thanks to World Meteorological Organization and Gianpaolo Balsamo for the organisation of this event at COP29 Azerbaijan ! I had the pleasure to exchange with Greg carmichael and Vanda Grubišić, Ph.D. about the key role played by space-based and in-situ Earth observations for supporting implementation and assessment of climate mitigation strategies.. provided that sustainability, quality assurance, and transparency are ensured!
This afternoon, we participated in the World Meteorological Organization panel “Earth Observations in support of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” at COP29 Azerbaijan 🌍 Director of the #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) Laurence Rouil remarked that a standardisation of Earth observation data will be essential to build confidence with users & policymakers.
