🌟🎓 How should the ZHAW develop in the coming years? What influence will the constantly changing environment have? 🎓🌟 👩🏫💭 Questions to reflect on the future role of the ZHAW Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften is what shaped this year's University Day. In different speeches from the ZHAW director Jean-Marc Piveteau, the president of the University Council of the USI Monica Duca Widmer, and the Zurich education director Silvia Steiner (Bildungsdirektion Kanton Zürich), we reflected on how the ZHAW can position itself in the European higher education area by strengthening strategic alliances such as EELISA European University , or how it can prepare its students specifically for the global labour market and at the same time support social development in this country by promoting entrepreneurship and sustainability. 🎥 The speeches were accompanied by video inputs from ongoing projects at the ZHAW, where we had the pleasure to actively participate by contributing an input about the FuelSOME project. In the video, René Itten and Alena Frehner give a brief insight into the project. After the video was shown, they went on to answer a few more questions about the ongoing project as well as talk about their experiences with European collaborations in research projects. 👉 Check out the video about the FuelSOME project and other impressions from the University Day: https://lnkd.in/dQRHPACA #ZHAW #University #UniversityDay #Education #Development Pictures: Christian Schwager

Applied research in environmental impact assessment
Info
Our commitment to research and education contributes to integrate life cycle thinking as a basis for ecological decisions in science, business, politics and society. The Life Cycle Assessment Research Group is part of the Institute for Environment and Natural Resources (IUNR), which is affiliated with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). We quantify and evaluate environmental impact over the entire life cycle of a products, services technologies, and systems according to scientific criteria. This impact assessment plays a key role in the sustainability optimisation of processes, products and services. It also serves to evaluate different systemic concepts and strategies and to communicate environmental benefits. The research group contributes towards the further development of LCA methodology and applies it in various subject areas, focusing on projects in the fields of nutrition, energy, health, and digitisation.

🌟 Should I or should I not? 🌟 Should we integrate life cycle results for the social, environmental, and economic sustainability dimensions into one combined LCSA assessment and result—or not? 🤷♀️🤷♂️ This was the core question debated at the 88th LCA Discussion Forum, held at the snow-covered Campus ZHAW Institut für Umwelt und Natürliche Ressourcen IUNR Wädenswil, with over 80 participants braving the cold to tackle this heated topic. ❄️🏔️☕ The day began with two presentations on the decision-maker's perspective. Serenella Sala addressed the policy point of view, while Bastien Girod followed with insights from the industry perspective. 🧠 In the subsequent session on methodological concepts for conducing LCSA, Sonia Valdivia and Walther Zeug presented their LCSA concept improvement with a handbook and a novel Holistic Integrated Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (HILCSA) approach. Denise Almeida from 2.-0 LCA consultants explained their approach to assessing social and environmental externalities. Finally, the morning ended with Alice Aubert presenting on participatory weighting and decision-making for sustainability. 🤝 After the lunch break, Marcus Berr from myclimate spoke about assessing the impact of supply disruptions along the supply chain within LCSA using a case study of battery electric vehicles. 🚗 Following this, Alena Frehner from our research group presented results of the FuelSOME project on sustainable shipping and addressed focus points for the integration of environmental and social aspects. 🌱 And Sahar Nava concluded this first afternoon session with a stakeholder-based approach to integrate LCSA in a construction project. 🏗️ The afternoon continued with several applied LCSA case studies by Natalia Cano, Heiko Keller, Lucia Rigamonti. We concluded the event with a fruitful workshop to discuss if and how all sustainability dimensions should be integrated in LCA. Thanks to all presenters as well as all participants for this enlightening discussion forum. Also, many thanks to all organizers Lucia Rigamonti, Giuseppe Cecere, Thomas Sonderegger, and special thanks to René Itten who hosted the event. 🎉 🌍📊 And what was the outcome on the question of integration? Well, the LCSA community was divided. Almost half of the participants remained skeptical about integration, particularly due to concerns about oversimplification and aggregation of results from different sustainability dimensions into one score. 🤔 The other half supported the integration approach, for instance, using a combined graph as demonstrated in the HILCSA approach. They argued that in reality, the sustainability dimensions are all intertwined. 🌱🌐 Where do you stand? Integration or separation—what's the way forward? 🌍📊 Let us know in the comments section below! What’s the environmental impact of cocoa? Silvan Wanner completed his master’s thesis on the life cycle assessment and biodiversity impact of organic cocoa from the Dominican Republic. His research provides the first-ever eco-balance of organic cocoa in this region. To collect data for his work, he travelled to the Dominican Republic and interviewed 50 cocoa producers on site. 🏝️ Even though deforestation is a potential issue on just a few farms, land use change related emissions have the highest share of emissions from cocoa, followed by transport emissions. With its high endemic species abundance, biodiversity in the Dominican Republic is particularly at risk. His findings emphasize the need for sustainable farming practices, such as reforestation, to reduce emissions and protect biodiversity. 🐍🐦🌴 You can find this article about his Master’s thesis and other exciting reports in the latest issue of the IUNR magazine of our institute ZHAW Institut für Umwelt und Natürliche Ressourcen IUNR (in German): https://lnkd.in/drWrkTnC 👈 📖

How well does plastic-free packaging perform? Lea Schneider investigated this question in her bachelor's thesis and came to the following conclusions: Firstly, the choice of materials has the greatest influence on the environmental impact of packaging. But replacing fossil-based plastic with renewable raw materials does not always lead to a lower environmental impact. In the case of bamboo fiber and sugar cane bagasse, however, it can make sense, as these are considered low value by-products of ethanol production and sugar production and therefore only cause a small proportion of the environmental impact.🌱 Further, even though plastic packaging could theoretically be recycled, in practice this often fails due to a lack of collection systems, which means it ends up as waste. ♻️ And finally, avoiding food waste must be a top priority, as even small amounts of food waste can negate the environmental benefits achieved through optimized packaging. You can find this article about her bachelor’s thesis and other exciting reports in the latest issue of the IUNR magazine of our institute ZHAW Institut für Umwelt und Natürliche Ressourcen IUNR (in German): https://lnkd.in/drWrkTnC 👈 📖 #realcycle #sustainablepackaging #packaging #renewablerawmaterial #sustainableplastics #circulareconomy
