𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 20/11... Mane Kocharyan and I are really excited to participate this morning in the ceremonious unveiling of the 2024 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝. It will be a solemn and joyous event hosted today by the Ville de Genève - City of Geneva and its child-friendly 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫 Christina Kitsos. Along with our tagged civil society partners we worked really hard with the City of Geneva - Ville de Genève to bring this project to fruition... BUT IT IS ONLY A BEGINNING... we are actively preparing the next phase for which we will share details in due time! 35 anni fa è stato sancito un impegno storico: i bambini sono stati riconosciuti dalla comunità internazionale come soggetti titolari di diritti. Per citarne alcuni: diritto all’identità, al nome, all’educazione, al gioco, alla partecipazione nei processi decisionali che li riguardano (incluse le procedure giudiziarie). Riprendendo l’azione pionieristica e visionaria di figure come Eglantyne Jebb, il 20 novembre 1989 le Nazioni Unite approvarono la Convenzione sui diritti dell’infanzia e dell’adolescenza, ottenendo la ratifica di 196 Stati su 197. Con una condivisione mai avvenuta nella storia. Da allora il mondo è cambiato a velocità inaspettate e imprevedibili, ma la Convenzione può e deve ancora richiamare i policymakers (a tutti i livelli) ad impegni quantomai attuali. Proprio di questi temi ho avuto l’opportunità di occuparmi quest’estate in una Summer School dell’Università di #Ginevra, città inestricabilmente legata allo sviluppo di queste idee, con decine di professionisti da tutto il mondo. Insieme abbiamo ragionato sull’attuazione dei diritti dell’infanzia oggi, concentrandoci sulle sfide, opportunità e problematiche aperte dall’ambiente digitale. 🌍 Today, on World Children’s Day, we proudly unveil the 2024 Declaration on the Rights of the Child! In honour of the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Geneva Declaration, Prof. Philip D. Jaffé (United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child), the Ville de Genève, and local civil society partners have crafted a renewed commitment to child rights that reflects today’s challenges and opportunities. Endorsed by global leaders, including Volker Türk the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, current and former chairs of the UNCRC, and over 70 organizations like Human Rights Watch and Save the Children International, the Declaration underscores a collective pledge to safeguard children’s rights worldwide. The situation of children around the world and in Switzerland is not ideal, but we must never abandon our ideals of working with them for their well-being. Philip D. Today, I conclude my work as the Director of International Law, Policy & Humanitarian Diplomacy of the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC. As I wind down for a long awaited sabbatical, I am deeply grateful: ➡️ for my extraordinary journey with the #RedCross ➡️ for the inspiring companionship of our colleagues ➡️ and for unforgettable moments shared with the men, women and children we serve. In parting, I wish to dedicate a piano inspiration to the memory of those who courageously served our mission and never returned - making the ultimate sacrifice in the name of humanity: “I gave it all...” Thank you, farewell & au revoir!
