The Global Migration and Media Academy (GMMA) is a unique platform to standardize and mainstream media training on migration as well as strengthen ethical and accurate reporting on migration. The Academy offers specialized courses on migration, media training, mentorship, migration data support and resources on journalism techniques. At #UNGA , IOM - UN Migration Director-General, Amy Pope and IOM Global goodwill ambassador, America Ferrera, shared strategies to fight misinformation and encourage accurate migration narratives.
With a strong focus on current crises and a look to the future of technology and AI, Day Four of the SDG Media Zone addressed the world’s most critical challenges: Read some highlights below: 1️⃣ The UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming; award-winning actress, activist and the Goodwill Ambassador for the IOM - UN Migration (IOM), America Ferrera; and the Director-General of IOM, Amy Pope, explored the impact of misinformation on public perceptions of migration and discussed strategies to foster more accurate and empathetic narratives. 2️⃣ Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone; Dr. Olayemi O. Dawodu, CEO of Cerba Lancet Nigeria Laboratories; Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, Deputy Executive Director at UN Women, and Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of UNFPA, emphasized the need to end child marriage and tackle poverty and illiteracy to effectively address women’s rights and combat gender-based discrimination in the region. 3️⃣ Nanette Braun from the UN Department of Global Communications led a conversation on the power of art for sustainable development with Birgitte Hagemann Snabe from Art 2030; Audrey Decker from @streetartmankind; and Tina Survilla Lindell from the Hug. They discussed how art intersects with activism to drive awareness and action for a better world. 4️⃣ Maher Nasser from the UN Department of Global Communication led a conversation with Katja Iversen, the CEO of the Museum for the United Nations – UN Live; Hanna Grahn from Spotify; and award-winning artist and activist Madame Gandhi on how music can create awareness and action around environmental conservation. “This course developed by IOM experts and our partners is a valuable resource that can help counter disinformation, misinformation and hate speech” At the launch of the Spanish version of the GMMA foundation course on Tuesday, Chief of Mission, IOM Mexico, Dana Graber Ladek reinforced the importance of the course in shaping #migration narratives. In Mexico, the #GMMA has collaborated with five academic partners in promoting ethical migration reporting. Over 150 persons joined the livestream of the Press briefing in Mexico.
