Battery Recycling: The Key to Achieving Sustainable Zero-Carbon Goals At the World New Energy Vehicle Congress on September 27, Zeng Yuqun, Chairman of CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd.), highlighted the critical importance of battery recycling for sustainable development. While batteries play a crucial role in storing renewable energy and enabling the path to zero carbon, Zeng stressed that sustainability is impossible if the batteries themselves aren't recyclable. He projected that by 2042, half of the world's batteries could be produced using recycled lithium. CATL, a leader in power and energy storage batteries, has made significant strides in battery recycling. The company currently has a capacity to process 270,000 tons of used batteries and aims to expand this to 1 million tons in the future. In 2023, CATL recycled 100,000 tons of used batteries, reprocessing them into 13,000 tons of lithium carbonate. The recycling process achieved a lithium recovery rate of 91% and a nickel-cobalt-manganese recovery rate of 99.6%. GEM Co., Ltd., another major player in the battery recycling industry, shares a similar outlook. In an interview on August 24, GEM's Chairman, Xu Kaihua, predicted that by 2040, recycled materials would account for 60% of nickel, 45% of lithium, and 55% of cobalt used in battery production. Globally, battery recycling is becoming a competitive edge for companies aiming to lead in the electric vehicle market. The European Union recently released draft guidelines to enhance battery recycling efficiency as part of its Battery and Waste Battery Law, which requires that by 2027, the lithium recovery rate must reach 50%, and by 2031, it must increase to 80%. In China, where the adoption of electric vehicles started early, a growing number of batteries are reaching the end of their lifecycle. The Chinese government has encouraged initiatives to replace old batteries with new ones, and anticipates a peak in battery recycling around 2030. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has proposed a New Energy Vehicle Power Battery Comprehensive Utilization Management Method, which is expected to be formally implemented in 2024. Despite progress, the battery recycling industry is facing challenges due to the declining price of raw materials. As of September 27, 2024, the price of battery-grade lithium carbonate was reported at 76,500 CNY/ton (~$10,520 USD), making the cost of recycling and reprocessing less competitive compared to direct raw material procurement. #BatteryRecycling #Sustainability #CATL #GreenEnergy #CircularEconomy #RenewableEnergy #ElectricVehicles #ZeroCarbon #LithiumRecycling #CleanTech #GreenInnovation #EnergyStorage #EURegulations #ChinaEnergyTransition #BatteryTechnology #EnvironmentalImpact

Lithium-Ion Battery Prices Drop by 73% Over the Past Decade Over the past ten years, lithium-ion battery prices have fallen by 73%. These batteries operate by collecting current during charging and directing it into the battery. Typically, a graphite anode attracts lithium ions and stores them as a charge. During discharge, the cathode absorbs the stored lithium ions and guides them to another current collector. The battery circuit functions effectively because the anode and cathode are suspended in a medium that facilitates ion flow, preventing direct contact between the two. Currently, the cost breakdown of battery components is as follows: the cathode accounts for 54%, the anode 18%, and other components 28%. The average price of lithium-ion batteries has consistently decreased, dropping from $290 per kWh in 2014 to $103 per kWh in 2023, with an estimated price of $78 per kWh in 2024—marking a 73% decline from 2014 levels. Yearly Global Average Battery Prices (USD/kWh) 2014: $290 2015: $230 2016: $180 2017: $140 2018: $128 2019: $120 2020: $110 2021: $99 2022: $129 2023: $103 2024 (Forecasted): $78 Compared to 2016, the market size for lithium-ion batteries (measured in GWh) has increased by 2000%. By 2040, the demand for batteries is expected to grow ninefold from its current levels. #LithiumIonBatteries #BatteryPrices #CleanEnergy #RenewableEnergy #EVBatteries #EnergyStorage #ElectricVehicles #BatteryTechnology #Sustainability #GreenTech #TechInnovation #FutureEnergy #MarketTrends #Electrification #CarbonReduction

Lithium Carbonate Prices in China Experience Fluctuations Amid Production Cuts and Seasonal Demand According to data from the Lithium Branch of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, the price of domestic lithium carbonate in August 2024 remained below $11,200 USD/ton. On August 30, the price of industrial-grade lithium carbonate was $10,010 USD/ton, representing a month-on-month decline of 10.1% and a year-on-year decrease of 59.3%. Battery-grade lithium carbonate was priced at $10,500 USD/ton, down 8.0% month-on-month and 59.6% year-on-year. In mid-August, lithium carbonate prices stabilized and saw a slight rebound in late August, primarily driven by production cuts on the supply side. Additionally, the increased production plans for cathode materials in September and October, in anticipation of the peak demand season, provided a boost to market demand. The combination of supply and demand factors led to the stabilization and slight rebound in lithium carbonate prices in late August. In the futures market, the price gap between the spot and futures prices widened towards the end of August. On August 30, the closing price of the main lithium carbonate futures contract on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange was $10,948 USD/ton, down 3.6% month-on-month and 65.7% year-on-year, with a smaller month-on-month decline compared to the spot price, resulting in a month-end spot-futures price difference of $931 USD/ton. Regarding supply, the Lithium Branch of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association noted that, in August, some companies continued to reduce production or halt production lines due to the low price levels, keeping the overall output stable compared to the previous month. In August, China's lithium salt production was slightly down compared to July. Total lithium salt production, in lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE), was about 92,000 tons, up 0.6% month-on-month. As of September 30, the latest market data from SMM indicated that the price index for battery-grade lithium carbonate was $10,520 USD/ton, an increase of $12 USD/ton compared to the previous trading day. The average price ranged from $10,472 to $10,710 USD/ton, with a slight uptick in price before the National Day holiday. However, purchasing sentiment was relatively low as downstream material manufacturers had already completed their pre-holiday inventory buildup. In the futures market on September 30, the main lithium carbonate contract (lc2411) surged to $11,340 USD/ton during trading before closing at $11,165 USD/ton, up $301 USD/ton from the previous day, marking a 2.7% increase. According to market analysts, while demand for lithium carbonate is supported by the peak season and growth in the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors, the slow rate of inventory reduction and dynamic shifts in supply-demand relationships may prevent significant price increases or declines in the near term. #LithiumCarbonate #BatteryMaterials #LithiumIndustry
