Celebrating success with the team of SECO, part of Olam Agri in Côte d'Ivoire and one of our partners in Africa for sustainable cotton production! We want to extend our congratulations to the SECO team for their dedicated efforts in supporting a significant number of cotton farmers in building resilience. Your work in helping them utilize local resources and blend scientific knowledge with locally applicable techniques is truly commendable. This commitment makes a significant impact in the community. This is a fantastic example of best practices in action, and we are proud to share their achievements on our channel! Keep up the great work Mahesh Ramakrishnan and team! 👏 #BestPractice #Sustainability #Empowerment #SustainableCotton #CottonmadeinAfrica #AidbyTradeFoundation #biochar #climatechange #soilhealth
The 2024-25 cotton harvesting campaign has concluded at Societe d'Exploitation Cotonniere Olam (SECO), an integrated ginning subsidiary of Olam Agri in Cote d'Ivoire. This season, more than 19,500 smallholder farmers cultivated #Cotton in approximately 84,000 hectares of #RainfedCotton. As the marketing phase progresses, farmers are also preparing and planning for the upcoming 2025-26 campaign. A key highlight of this season was the successful production of 1,800 MT of biochar using pyrolysis techniques like Cone-Pit open earth Klin, and CIFOR-ICRAF designed pyrolysis furnace design, enriched with #BokashiCompost by SECO progressive farmers. They applied 4 tonnes per hectare (2 tonnes biochar, enriched with 2 tonnes of bokashi) across 900 hectares of cotton fields. The results were remarkable, with a 25 ~ 30% increase in #SeedCotton yield (kg/ha) compared to control plots. #Fibre quality analysis in our HVI lab further confirmed excellent parameters: a staple length exceeding 29 mm (HUML MM 1 - 5/32), Strength 32 g/tex, and Micronnaire 4.2. Encouraged by these results, neighbouring farmers and our farm extension team are now preparing for large-scale adoption of biochar-enriched compost. This initiative is expected to enhance #SoilHealth, increase #CarbonSequestration, and boost both productivity and #ClimateResilience, reinforcing Olam Agri's commitment to #SustainableCottonFarming. regenagri, Aid by Trade Foundation, Better Cotton, #CottonmadeinAfrica, #AfricaCottonFoundation, CIFOR-ICRAF, Mitsubishi Corporation, International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), CIRAD, Solidaridad West Africa
