Our biofabricated yarns made from spider silk proteins are on display as part of the exhibition “Future Lab: Shaping Nature”. The exhibition deals with questions such as: What strategies have animals developed to shape their environment according to their needs? What materials do they use for their constructions? How do their construction activities affect their habitat - and what can we humans learn from this for our construction and production processes? For the Annunciation to Mary, we'll have to wait until the spring, but this morning we did enjoy an annunciation by Marie. To avoid the nitpicking about the wording (-onation, -onisation, -onization), let's simply call it decarb. #Joltian investment director Marie Nicod just delivered the opening keynote at the Tibi seminar on decarb investment opportunities at the Ministry of Economics, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty in Paris. Because the deeptech-based decarb market is huge and fast growing, of course we asked our AI butler #JoltNinja to produce a report that was unpacked and commented by Marie earlier today. Concentrating on 4 major areas (alt energy sources, energy storage and conversion, new materials and processes, carbon management), a whopping 22K companies in the world have been scrutinized (9K in Europe, 6K in NorAm, 4.5K in Asia). In 10 years, 10000 decarb deals and 180 billion € raised (1400 deals in 2023 alone for 40 billion € raised, 18% of those in the growth stage segment, up from only 8% in 2021). 70% of these 22K companies are currently in what we call the "hidden universe" (flying under the investment radars, since they haven't raised any VC/PE money, either to small or because they are fed by a corporate parent company). This ratio of covert opportunities is much larger in the decarb world than in many other sectors says Ninja. 120K active patents in the field, including some European companies with a stellar "Jolt Patent Score" (have a look at what AMSilk GmbH | Biotech Materials does). European companies hold 2.4K active patents in the domain, with a median JPS improving over time. And for the exits? Roughly 200 deals per year in the past 4 years, with an average deal size at 200 million €.
