📣🗞️We are thrilled to feature in a TechInformed article about how our technology is helping iron out fashion’s sustainability issues. 🌎 The fashion and textile industry relies heavily on synthetic fibres, which account for almost 70% of textile production. 🏭 These fibres are derived from fossil fuels and have a high carbon footprint, with fashion’s most widely used synthetic fibre, polyester, producing around 125 million tonnes of CO2e emissions in 2022 alone. 🔷 Despite the environmental impacts, these fibres often have performance attributes that are difficult to replicate in more sustainable alternatives. 🐝 On top of this, natural textile alternatives such as cotton and hemp require a lot of environmentally damaging pesticides. 👤 In the article, James MacDonald spoke about how Solena Materials leverages engineering biology to overcome these challenges and provide a real alternative for the industry. ⚡ He highlighted how our technology helps to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion sector by creating the next generation of synthetic fibres. 🔬 James discussed how our deep learning models help us to design new-to-world proteins from scratch to develop fibres that are: 🔹 High performance, 🔹 Non-oil derived 🔹 … and have desirable qualities like superior soft-hand feel. 💬 He also stressed that “We have a technology platform that can produce fibres that are customised to particular use cases, offering versatility that sets us apart.” ⏩ Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/e3x6P6JC Thanks to Nicole Deslandes for the write-up! #SustainableFashion #SustainableTextiles #SyntheticBiology #Innovation #UKInnovation #EngineeringBiology #TechInformed
