With the Closing Ceremony on November 23rd, the 17th Edition of the TorinoFilmLab wrapped. For their project “A Day in the life of Jo: Chapter Phaedra” Greek director Jacqueline Lentzou and producer Annabelle Aronis received the ARRI Award which offers a grant of 10,000€ for supporting the implementation of its visual vision and approach. Congratulations to Belgian directors Raphaël Venayre (middle, first image) and Antoine Guerci from “The End of Vacation” on winning the ARRI Award for "Best Documentary" at the Filmschoolfest Munich (FILMFEST MÜNCHEN)! Each year, this festival for emerging filmmakers screens a selection of the best up-and-coming projects from film schools around the world, which are judged by an independent festival jury. The ARRI Award, with a value of 4,000 euros in rental equipment or services, was presented by Andrea Rosenwirth (right, first image), Project Manager Support Programs at ARRI Rental. The documentary “The End of Vacation” tells the story of the four-star Hotel Eden in Tunesia; a tourist resort where the ground floor is reserved for the loving care of retirement home residents. "By the Riverside" ("Ọkpẹn-Ẹzẹ"), a short film created as part of the Nollywood Workshop 2023, recently premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival! This film was born in the context of the unique collaboration between six filmmakers from Nigeria and six students from Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg GmbH, and it was shot on location in Benin City, Nigeria, with support from ARRI, the German Ministry of Culture, and the Goethe-Institut Nigeria. The stunning cinematography by Paul Sonntag was captured with ALEXA 35 and Signature Prime lenses. Paul shared: “To tell the story authentically, we filmed in low-light interiors on location in Benin City. In these challenging conditions the camera performed flawlessly. I was especially impressed with how it captured a range of skin tones of our fantastic cast. The textures we used in-camera helped bring the directors’ vision to life beautifully.” The Nollywood Workshop is part of a three-year program running from 2023 to 2025, promoting cross-cultural filmmaking between Nigeria and Germany.
