Child labour and modern slavery still affect millions worldwide: 🔹 50 million people live in modern slavery, with 28 million in forced labour. 🔹 160 million children are engaged in child labour worldwide, losing their education, healthcare, and futures. The fashion industry, while shaping global trends, still faces exploitation in its supply chains, from cotton production to garment manufacturing. Exploitation stems from weak labour laws, opaque supply chains, and the relentless demand for low-cost, fast-produced goods. Women and girls bear a disproportionate cost, facing poverty wages, debt coercion, and abuse. But change is possible: ✅ Greater transparency and robust policies are needed to protect workers. ✅ International frameworks like the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) can push for meaningful accountability in supply chains. ✅ Consumers can drive change by choosing responsible brands and demanding action. The RBH Network has released a Joint Statement with key recommendations for successfully implementing Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence (#CSDD) in global supply chains. Representing over 300,000 companies across key production sectors, the RBH Network calls for action from regulators and buying companies to promote fairness and shared responsibility. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Implement CSDD as a shared responsibility, ensuring fair distribution of costs and burdens across supply chain partners. 2️⃣ Address social and environmental risks through responsible purchasing practices that build trust and transparency. 3️⃣ Promote collaboration and continuous improvement, avoiding disengagement as a first response to risks. 4️⃣ Empower suppliers to develop their own sustainability strategies, fostering trustful communication and proactive measures. 5️⃣ Ensure policy coherence and consistent communication to help buyers and suppliers navigate evolving regulations. Vietnam’s National Assembly has passed a new Trade Union Law, which will take effect on July 1, 2025. This marks a significant step forward for workers’ rights in Vietnam. For the first time, foreign workers with contracts of 12 months or more can join trade unions. This change fosters collaboration between local and foreign workers, helping to share skills and ideas while ensuring equal access to worker representation. The law also gives informal workers in Vietnam the right to join unions, expanding support to those outside formal employment relationships. Trade unions will now have a stronger role in protecting workers’ rights, providing feedback on policies, and ensuring financial transparency.
